Practical Statistics

COURSE NUMBER STAT 31
DESCRIPTIVE TITLE PRACTICAL STATISTICS
COURSE This is the first course in basic statistical concepts. Topics include
DESCRIPTION frequency distributions of empirical data, calculations of descriptive
statistics and review of commonly occurring distributions (binomial,
normal, etc.) needed for understanding basic ideas of statistical
inference. It introduces central limit theories, estimation and
hypothesis testing. The course gives emphasis on application
through problem solving. The use of graphing calculators and
computer algebra systems is highly encouraged.

COURSE At the end of this course, the students are expected to:
OBJECTIVES a. understand mathematical facts, laws, procedures,
and perform the fundamental operations and
processes with increase skills and accuracy;
b. appreciate how the various mathematical principles

c. develop the power of analytical thinking and
reasoning in the solution, interpretation and
evaluation of mathematical problems;
d. appreciate the role of statistics in the growing

X. CLASSROOM POLICIES
•Uniform and dress code
•Student should be in proper uniform, wear school ID and appropriate shoes
except during laboratory class.
•On free day, hip – hop dresses and get – ups are not allowed, e.g. short,
slippers, earrings for males, spaghetti strap, etc.
•PE uniform should be worn only during PE class
•Attendance, tardiness and absenteeism
•Minimum of 80% attendance of the total contract hours in the subject is required
(Checking is done every meeting)
•Tardiness of 15 minutes is equivalent to one hour period of absence.
•A minimum of 3 consecutive absence without justifiable reason requires a
promissory note from the college guidance coordinator
•6 consecutive absences in the class mean “drop” in the subject.
•Failure to take the prelim exam preceded by absences means “drop” in the
subject.
•Failure to attend regular classes after taking the prelim exam means of grade of
5.0 in the subject.
•Taking examinations
•Cheating and copying are strictly PROHIBITED, “when caught cheating during
the quizzes and long exams, deduction of points will be imposed”; during mid-
term or final exams, means a grade of 5.0 in the subject.
•Borrowing of calculators and other exam paraphernalia is NOT allowed during
exams.
•During mid-term and final exams, only answer sheets, permits, calculators,
pens, pencils, and erasers are allowed on the desk; other things should be
deposited on a place designated by the teacher.
•Other policies will be imposed as deemed necessary and agreed upon between
the students and subject professor.
•Other policies:
•Cell phones should be shut-off during class hours.
•Chairs should be arranged before leaving the classroom.
•Vandalism is strictly prohibited and punishable.
•No smoking within the school premises.
•Students under the influence of liquor are not allowed inside the
school compound.
•Any form of deadly weapons should not be brought to school except
cleaning/cutting tools during clean-up days and laboratory classes.
•Unnecessary noise to the point of creating disturbances is prohibited.
•Proper grooming should be observed (i.e. short and undyed hair for
males)
•Other policies will be strictly imposed as contained in the student
handbook.
CONTRACT
Attendance: No Calculator, no attendance. I will attend my class with
my personal calculator every meeting.
Course Participation: I will contribute at least one comment every
meeting and actively participate in class recitation. I will also take down
notes for my reference.
Readings: I will complete all assigned readings and pass it on or before
the deadline.
Study: I will spend a minimum of one hour per day reviewing notes and
reading in advance.
Assignment: I will work on my assignments and pass it on time.
Course Help: I will attend instructor office hours at least once per week.
Group Project: I will communicate at least weekly with peers in my
work group (face to face or electronically) about our shared course
project.
