The Digital Self

This document discusses the self and identity in cyberspace. It defines the self as an individual's reflective consciousness. There are two kinds of self - the true self, which represents our real feelings and desires, and the false self, which is created to protect the true self from harm. Cyberspace refers to online communication over computer networks. In cyberspace, individuals can selectively present themselves through their online identity and user ID, managing impressions through strategies like self-enhancement or self-depreciation. Online interactions may impact how people see themselves.

Self and other in cyberspace

• Selective self presentation and impression
management
• Impact of online Interactions on the self
SELF

The self is an individual person as the object of his or her

own reflective consciousness. This reference is necessarily
subjective, thus self is a reference by a subject to the same
subject
Two kinds of self

FALSE SELF TRUE SELF

True self
-is represented by
our real feelings
and desire.
False Self- that is
created to protect the
"true self" from insult
and danger.

CYBERSPACE

?
CYBERSPACE
Cyberspace is the theoretical environment where
communication occurs over computer networks.
I, me, myself and my user ID online identity

I - This is who you are to yourself.

Beliefs, values, and thoughts that
belong to you alone.
Me - This is who you are to everybody
else. This is the weight of perspective
and opinion forced upon you.
Myself - This is the conflict between I
and me. The bridge between
perspectives.
Online identity, is a social identity that an Internet
user establishes in online communities and websites.
It can also be considered as an actively constructed
presentation of oneself. Although some people choose
to use their real names online, some Internet users
prefer to be anonymous, identifying themselves by
means of pseudonyms, which reveal varying amounts
of personality identifiable information.
Selective self presentation
and
impression management
Self-presentation
-it refers to how people attempt to
present themselves to control or
shape how others (called the
audience) view them.
-is part of a broader set of behaviors
called impression management.
Two distinct forms of selective self-presentation

•self-enhancement- a person advertises his

or her strengths, virtues, and admirable
qualities.
•self-depreciation- a person makes only
humble or modest claims.
