Summary of Module 2

This document outlines the key components of a research study introduction, including the rationale, theoretical background, statement of the problem, statement of hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and limitations, and definition of terms. It provides brief descriptions of each component and their purpose in introducing and justifying the research.

THE PROBLEM AND

ITS SCOPE
Jessica E. Laran
The Problem and Its Scope

1. Rationale
2. Theoretical Background
3. Statement of the Problem
4. Statement of Hypothesis
5. Significance of the Study
6. Scope and Limitations
7. Definition of Terms
RATIONALE
Rationale

Describes the underlying basis of the

study or research, and basically explains
what you propose to do. It is a very
important part of the study or research as
it justifies the significance and novelty of
the study.
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
Theoretical Background

 Is the structure that can hold or support a

theory of a research study. It introduces and
describes the theory which explains why the
research problem under study exists.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Statement of the Problem

It is used in research work as a claim

that outlines the problem addressed
by the study. It mostly starts in the
common W and H questions, who,
what, why, how.
STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS
Statement of Hypothesis

a statement of expectation or prediction

that will be tested by research. The types
of hypothesis include alternative, null,
directional and non-directional. The
alternative hypothesis states a
relationship between two variables, while
the null hypothesis states otherwise.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Significance of the Study
 The significance of a study must be stated in the Introduction section
of your research paper. While stating the significance, you must
highlight how your research will be beneficial to the development of
science and the society in general. You can first outline the
significance in a broader sense by stating how your research will
contribute to the broader problem in your field and gradually narrow it
down to demonstrate the specific group that will benefit from your
research. While writing the significance of your study, you must
answer questions like:
 Who will benefit with your study?
 How will this study contribute to the development of your field?
 Why should your research be published?
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
Scope and Limitations
 sets boundaries and parameters of the problem inquiry and
narrows down the scope of the inquiry.
 The SCOPE is the domain of your research - what is in the
domain and what is not.
 As for the LIMITATION, it should not be confused with the
term DELIMITATION. LIMITATION is associated with
qualitative study as related to validity while DELIMITATION
refers to boundaries of the research study arising from the
researcher’s decision of what to exclude.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Definition of Terms

 indicates or present the function or how the

word or term was used in the research.
 There two types of definition of terms the
conceptual and operational definition.
