Scientific Computing: Gopalakrishnan E. A

This document discusses numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) describing the motion of a freely falling particle. It first presents the mathematical model of the particle's motion as an ODE. It then compares analytical and numerical solution methods. The document focuses on the Euler method as a numerical approach and discusses its truncation error, stability, and modifications like Heun's method.

• Consider a freely falling particle of mass

“m”. We need to determine the velocity of
the particle at any time “t”.

Stability of Euler method

• A numerical solution is said to be unstable if errors grow exponentially for a

problem for which there is a bounded solution. The stability of a particular
application can depend upon three factors: the differential equation, the
numerical method, and the step size.
