Corona Shield

The document discusses composite insulators used in high voltage transmission and discusses three main factors that can cause degradation: environmental stresses, electrical stresses, and mechanical stresses. It then discusses how non-uniform electric fields on insulator surfaces can lead to surface discharges and dry bands, degrading the insulator over time. Numerical modeling is presented as a method to analyze electric field distribution and potential improvements to insulator design.

Degradation of composite insulator

High Voltage Insulator

One of the main factors for development of electrical stress on insulator surface is
due to the non-uniform E-field distribution and electric potential on the
insulator surface.

The usually non-uniform field profile along the surface has peak regions where dry
bands are formed, with subsequent surface discharges. Since field control is highly
desirable to alleviate the effect of such discharges on polymeric outdoor insulator.
Field Distribution

In recent year, usage of composite insulator are increased day by day. So it is

necessary to design a insulator should operate in an effective manner under normal or
abnormal condition.

The performance of the insulator is analysed by evaluating the E-field distribution

and its effect on the insulator. A knowledge of electric field and potential
distribution along high voltage insulators is of great importance in the design,
operation and performance of the equipment.
The E-field distribution of the composite insulators is a function of numerous parameters including
applied voltage, insulator design, tower configuration, corona ring and hardware design,
phase spacing, etc.
In general, the Electric field values are very high near to the energized and grounded ends of the
composite insulators.
Several techniques can be used for the analysis of electric field. They can be categorized into:
1) Experimental field analysis methods,
2) Analytical methods and
3) Numerical analysis methods.
MODELLING OF 11KV INSULATOR

 The model is an axial-symmetric (2D) mould was adopted to simulate the

insulator. The finite element analysis is performed using a quasi-static
electric current module in the commercially available COMSOL
MULTIPHYSICS software.

STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS

Structure of a Composite Insulator

 A typical 11kV composite insulator consists of a fibre reinforced plastic
(FRP), onto which metal end fittings are attached. To protect the core
from environmental stresses, it is covered with a polymeric cover, called
the housing (common housing materials are EPDM and silicone rubber is
used).
