Objectives and limitations
Objectives:
• To prepare the demonstrative model of use of plastic in road construction.
• To learn the various components of road.
• To perform various test related to road construction.
Limitations:
• It might not be feasible to heat the bituminous mixture upto the actual required
temperature as it has to be laid in ply board.
4
Plastic roads
• Plastic road and its superiority over asphalt road (in terms of wear resistance)
• Advantages of using plastic road:
Strength
Resistance towards water.
Construction and maintenance time.
Cost reduction.
Reduce the use of bitumen.
• Disadvantages of using plastic road:
cleaning process.(leaching)
5
Structure of road
• Sub grade:
It is the foundation of the road.
Most important structure of road.
Bears all the road and transfer it.
• Sub base:
Composition.(upper course and lower course)
Importance (prevents capillary action)
Thickness (7.5 to 15 cm)
Material used.
6
• Road base:
Classification (upper and lower base road)
Importance (avoids distortion of wearing course)
Material used (for upper and lower course)
• Surfacing:
Definition (uppermost layer)
Binder course and wearing course.
Functions
penetration of water
Saves lower layer from external effects (abrasion and weathering)
Binder course
Wearing course

Components of composite plastic road
• Bitumen:
Black viscous mixture of hydrocarbon
Used for road surfacing and roofing
Binding agent

• Aggregates:
Types:
Course aggregate (2.36 mm sieve)
Fine aggregate (0.072 mm sieve)

• Waste plastic modifiers:
Enhance the properties of bituminous concrete mixture.
Reduces the air voids.
Prevents bleeding by binding.
Plastic waste such as carry bags ,water bottles ,milk packets, etc can be used.
10
Essential tests
• Test on aggregates:
Aggregate crushing test
To check strength of course aggregate
High resistance to crushing high quality of pavements.
Abrasion test (Los angeles abrasion test)
To test the hardness property of stones
To find the percentage wear due to rubbing between aggregates and steel ball
(abrasive charge)
Impact test
To evaluate the resistance to impact of aggregates.
Should not exceeds 30% for aggregates and 35% for bitumen
California bearing ratio test
Penetration test for evaluation of strength of roads and pavements.
To determine the thickness of pavements and its coponents layers.
11
• Test on bitumen:
Penetration test
To determine the hardness of bitumen.
Distance in tenth of mm under 400 gm load at 25 deg C for 5 sec.
Softening point test
Determines the temperature at which bitumen attains particular degree of softening.
Procedure (brass ring and steel ball)
Preferences (climate condition)
Viscosity test
Defines fluid property of bitumen
Measure of resistance to flow.
