Group Assessment

The group is composed of seven (7) Senior Citizen

of Barangay 39-D, Davao City. They were
experiencing the feeling of despair and loneliness
because of their age and for being disappointed
with themselves for not reaching their goal in the
past.
The group shows eagerness to motivate themselves
and they have a strong personality even they were
having difficulties on how to cope up and get rid
from the feeling of despair and loneliness.
Furthermore, the group confided that they
are still gearing up to continue with their life
since they were motivated by their grand
children as the source of their strength that
somehow can ease their loneliness.
The problem of the group can be solved even
it takes a long process with the help and
support of their family and significant people in
the community.
According to Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial
stages the Ego Integrity vs. Despair, Erickson
believed that if we see our lives as
unproductive and feel guilt about our past or
feel that we did not accomplish our life goals,
We become dissatisfied with life and develop
despair and often leading to hopelessness. In
connection with the group problem the senior
citizen develop loneliness and despair because
they were not satisfied of not accomplishing
their goals and dreams in the past and they
feel unproductive.
Activity theory is also applicable to this case. The
theory emphasizes the importance of ongoing social
activity. This theory suggests that a person's self-
concept is related to the roles held by that person
retiring may not be so harmful if the person actively
maintains other roles. In relation with the case the
senior citizen should socialize and do such social
activity like family roles they should continue their
role as a parent and grand parent, in the community
role it is good if they will join in the religious activity
and recreational role so that they will feel the sense of
belongingness.
In addition to this, family intervention
approach is applicable to this case since the
family of the senior citizen are the one who
contributed the feelings of loneliness and
despair that has been experiencing of the
members in the group, for the reason of being
abandoned and they were treated as a burden
of their children.
If the problem of the group is not intended
immediately, they will still suffer the feeling of
loneliness and despair and unfortunately will leads
to depression. Moreover, the older person should
be given the opportunity to live with love and care
and to live productively regardless with their age.
There’s also a need to reach out the family
members of the group for them to be able to
understand profoundly and explained that senior
citizen needs special attention, extra care and they
should be sensitive enough with the feelings of
aged.
