Oracle Release Strategy

Oracle changed their release strategy in 2018

 New: Release every year !
- Long-term Releases: latest long-term support release is 19c - supported on IBM Systems (until 2027)
- Shor-term Releases (‘innovation releases’) - available only for 18 months, no extended support
– not supported on IBM Systems

• Oracle recommends customers to upgrade

to the latest long-term release – e.g. 19c

• Rolling out an innovation release in production increases

pressure on upgrade cycles

• Long-term releases provide a more stable foundation for

production / mission critical workloads

their Release Schedule of Current Database Releases (Doc ID 742060.1) which does not provide
a 21c Innovation Release date for IBM Systems (AIX and Linux on Z), causing concern that Oracle
support for IBM Systems has been impacted.

Highlights of this new document, Announcement: Support Statement for Oracle Database
running on IBM Systems. Confirms the large install base and relevance of IBM Systems customers
to Oracle with 80,000 joint customers ~99% of those running on AIX on Power
• Confirms long-term commitment to developing and releasing Oracle Database on IBM Systems
• Confirms upcoming Long Term Releases of Oracle Database will be on IBM Systems and provides
a target date for next release of 2023
• Demonstrates supported offerings well past the end of the decade
