Dialogue Writing
Dialogue Writing
Introduction
• Dialogue is exchange of views between two or
more people.
• Dialogue writing is conversation in written
form.
• Mostly it involves two people (‘di’ means two)
but may have more people.
Instruction for Writing Dialogue
• You can use contraction or short form of words
while writing dialogue as it is conversation.
• Be careful in using punctuation, such as inverted
commas and the sign of exclamation, while
writing dialogues.
• It is important to note that the speaker in
dialogue writing should be followed by
semicolon (e.g., Lawyer:). The words of the
speaker follow the semicolon.
Continued
• Do not put dash after semicolon. It should be
written with two dots (:) only.
• Be aware of the nature of relation between
characters while writing dialogues. For
example, formal relation exists between a
teacher and student whereas there is informal
relation between two friends. Therefore, word
choice should be made by keeping in view the
formality of the relation between characters.
