Brainstorming

◦ Best known techniques

◦ A modern method for organized ideation first
employed in the West by Alex Osborne in 1938
◦ Creative conference, ideally of 8 to 12 people meeting
for less than an hour to develop a long list of 50 or
more ideas
◦ A small group of people interact with very little
structure
◦ with goal of producing a large quantity of novel and
imaginative ideas.
Sumitra Joshi/Shrestha
Brainstorming
Guidelines for brainstorming:
◦ Keep the group small
◦ Have a well defined problem
◦ Limit the session to 40 to 60 minutes
◦ Team should be from equal ground
◦ Should record all ideas
◦ Circular or U shape sheet arrangement to encourage
communication and interaction
◦ Encourage all ideas from the team, even wild and
extreme one

Mind-mapping

◦ A sketching, diagramming or graphical technique

◦ that encourages thinking on both sides of the brain
◦ visually displays relationships among ideas
◦ and improves the ability to see a problem from many sides.

Sumitra Joshi/Shrestha
Mind-mapping

◦ The mind-mapping process:

1. Start your mind map by writing down sketching a picture symbolizing
the problem or the main topic in a center of a large piece of blank paper
2. Think about what main factors, ideas, concepts, or components are
directly related to your topic. Write down the most important factors as
the main branches of the concept. connect each idea to the central
picture or main topic
3. Now concentrate on one of these headings or main ideas. Identify the
factors or issues related to this particular idea. Additional branches and
details can be added if needed. Use key words, not phrases, if at all
possible, to keep the map uncluttered
4. When the flow of ideas slows to a trickle, stop! Don’t try to force
creativity
5. Allow your mind to rest for a few minutes and then begin to integrate
the ideas on the page into a mind map

Sumitra Joshi/Shrestha
Rapid prototyping

◦ Transforming an idea into an actual model

◦ that will point out flaws and lead to design improvements.
◦ Model do not have to be perfect
◦ Perfecting a model is a waste of time
