History of Time: Made by Areeba 6A

The Egyptians were the first to divide the day into parts using obelisks to tell time through shadow positions. The water clock, invented in 1600 BCE, measured time through regulated water flow. Sundials also used shadow positions to indicate time during daylight hours. The hourglass, invented in the 8th century AD, was more portable than water clocks and useful for sailors, with smaller designs fitting in pockets. Christiaan Huygens later invented the pendulum clock in 1656, using a swinging pendulum to regulate timekeeping.

History of Time

Made by Areeba 6A
The Egyptians

The Sumerians were the first to develop the concept of time but as the
culture died out there concept was lost. The egyptians were the first to
divide the day into parts. They made obelisks a four-sided tall structure
with a pyramid top.The obelisks were geographically located in certain
places. They told the time through their shadows. They were like
sundials.
The Water Clock
The water clock was invented in 1600 bce.The
oldest one was found in the tomb of a person
named Amenhotep I.Water clock measures time
through the flow of water.Water clocks were
among the earliest timekeepers that didn't
depend on the observation of celestial
bodies. They have to keep the constant pressure
of water going to tell the time.

The Sundial
The Theodosius of Bithynia is said to
have invented a universal sundial
that could be used anywhere on
Earth. The first record of sundials is
in Rome 293 BCE.We can tell the time
through a sundial by checking
where the shadow is on the base of
the sundial. It only works during the
day.

The Hourglass
The hourglass was invented by Liutprand,a french
monk,in the 8th century AD.It measures time
through dropping sand.It was more useful than
water clock because the water clock needed to be
stable but the hourglass could be kept
anywhere. This was an advantage to the
sailors.Soon after the hourglass spread too
everywhere and then they started making smaller
hourglasses so that they could be kept in the
pocket.

The Pendulum clock
Christiaan Huygens invented the
pendulum clock. He made it in 1656.He
used a weight hung from a string so
that it would swing freely. It works by
the energy made by the swinging
pendulum.Galileo and his son had
made plans to make it but none of
them lived to finish it.
Galileo’s design
for the pendulum
clock
Soon after the pendulum clock was made the
mechanical clock was invented by Villard de
Honnecourt a french architect.Soon after that
the digital clock was made.
