Methane Layering in Mines

The document describes calculating methane emission per tonne of coal mined from air sampling data. Samples at the intake showed 0.2% methane and samples at the return showed 0.7% methane, with an air flow of 20 m3/s and 1000 tonnes of coal produced per day. The difference in methane concentration was used to calculate methane emitted per second, which was then extrapolated to methane emitted per day and divided by the daily coal production to determine methane emission was 8.64 m3 per tonne of coal mined.

Samples of air collected in the intake and return gates of advancing

longwall face show 0.2 and 0.7% CH4 respectively. Calculate the
methane emission per tonne of coal mines, if the production from the
face averages 1000 tonnes per day and the air quantity of 20 m3/s
circulates along the face.
1. Difference = 0.7% - 0.2% = 0.5%
Q = 20 m3/s
2. Methane emitted = (0.5/100) * 20 = 0.1 m3/s
3. Methane emission in 24 hours will be
24*60*60*0.1 m3/day = 8640 m3/day
Production = 1000 tonnes /day
4. Methane emission per tonne of coal
8640 m3/day / 1000 tonnes/day
8.64 m3/tonne
ANS: 8.64 m3/tonne
Methane emitted from the face
X m3/s

Intake Side, 0.2% methane was found Return Side, 0.7 % of methane was found

Flow = 20 m3/s Flow = 20 + X m3/s

Methane Quantity

(0.2/100)*20 + X = (0.7/100)*(20+X)

Air samples collected from the intake and the return gates of a retreating longwall
face show methane concentration values of 0.1 % and 0.8 % respectively. The
production from the longwall face is 2000 tonne/day and the air quantity circulating
the face is 15 m3 /s. The rate of methane emission in m3 per tonne of coal produced

Methane Layering

1. Because of low density, methane has tendency for streaming particularly in dipping roadways.
2. Turbulent air flow and a rough roof with obstructions reduces the tendency of methane layering.
3. Descentional ventilation helps in producing turbulence in the air flow and thus helps preventing methane layering.
4. The tendency of methane layering is high in Ascentional ventilation.
5. Stable methane layer can also be formed in horizontal airways.

Methane Layering Number:
The stability of methane layer is indicated by a dimensionless number called Methane Layering Number.

Where, v = average velocity of air(m/s), Q = quantity of methane emitted into the airway(m 3/s), W = width of airway (m)
Horizontal Airways:
If the layering number exceeds 2, it causes turbulent diffusion and
the methane layer breaks, However a layer of sufficient length still
forms.
With the increase in layering number, the length of methane layer
decreases. The desirable methane layering number for horizontal
roadways is 5.

Inclined Airways:
The desirable layering number in inclined roadways depends on the
direction of airflow. For Ascentional ventilation, desirable layering
number is around 8. and for Descentional ventilation it is less than that
for horizontal roadways.
