• Senior Secondary Education
• Duration:3-4 Years
• Students can choose to enter either general
(academic) senior secondary school or vocational
senior secondary school. Vocational senior

• If students fail the Zhongkao exam, there are still


many choices of life path for them. Generally,
students will go to a technical secondary school or
vocational school to receive career training. After
graduation, they can go to work directly or attend
Gaokao and continue academic learning.

• Vocational education programs are offered at both


the secondary and post-secondary levels.
• Vocational senior secondary schools provide subject
and occupation specific education and training.

• Vocational education in China follows a flexible


approach.
• Most vocational students are given 3 to 4 years in

• It is possible for graduates of higher vocational

limited number of fields.

A Typical School Day in China


• The Chinese school day is a very long day:
• It starts at 7:30 in the morning and mostly finishes at
about 4:00 in the afternoon.
• In case the students still attend classes of optional
subjects, they might stay even longer.
• After the fifth lesson there is a long lunch break of
two hours. Lunch packets are distributed to those
who have paid for it and they will eat it in their
classrooms.

• Those who have not ordered any lunch go to the


snack bar across the road or to the restaurant at the
net corner.
• On Saturdays, many schools hold required morning
classes in science and math. Many students also
attend buxiban, or cram school, in the evening and

want. Some people retake it more than ten times,

By May 2017, there were 2,914 colleges and
universities, with over 20 million students enrolled in
mainland China. The system includes Bachelors,
Masters and Doctoral degrees, as well as non-

students. The Ministry of Education of the People's
Republic of China (MOE) is the government

• China’s function of supervision is focused on


inspection rather than guidance or mentoring.
• Chinese education management has focused merely
on teachers’ employment, appointment, training

emphasized regular instructional classroom
observation through the Philippine Professional
Standards for Teachers and School Heads. Teachers
will undergo 4 standard classroom observations
with non classroom observable activities to ensure
that teachers are doing the responsibilities
prescribed by the standards.

ACTIONS TAKEN…
• The campaign of supervision over the quality of
compulsory education has been conducted since 2015,
for the purposes of diagnosing the weaknesses in
teaching activities and providing evidence for sound
policy making and teaching improvement. Meanwhile, a
mechanism for supervising primary and secondary
schools was also established and had, to date, achieved
universal coverage across the country by designating
one supervisor for five schools.

• In 2017, the State Council issued the Methods of
Evaluating the Performance of Provincial Governments
in Their Education-related Work, which specifies the
duties of provincial governments in coordinating efforts
for educational development and proposes measures of
conducting supervision and evaluation and promoting
accountability, representing a major innovation in
educational administrative reform.

WAYS FORWARD…
• In 2018, the Educational Supervision Committee (ESC)
under the State Council and the MOE jointly organized
the country’s first assessment of the provincial
governments’ performance in fulfilling their
education-related duties, further enhancing the
effective implementation of major educational policies
by local governments.
