INTRODUCTION
• We live in a Natural as well as social world.

• Development cannot be of only the rich nor it means only high

living standards.

• It has to be a holistic approach not just Economic development.

• Social aspects, development and environment have a strong

relation.
What is Unsustainable Development?
It is

• Unsystematic planning

• Irresponsible Planning

• Living without planning

• Living without thinking about others

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

• Sustainable development is defined as economic

development that is conducted without depletion
of natural resources.
• It is based on improving the quality of life for all
within the capacity of the natural ecosystem.
• To ensure this any activity that brings about
economic growth must also
consider environmental effects it may have.
SPREADING MAHATMA GANDHI’S IDEAS

• He stressed on the need for sanitation based on recycling human and

animal manure and well-ventilated cottages built of recyclable material.
• He envisioned roads as being clean and free of dust.
• His main objective was to use village made goods instead of industrial
products.

A growing realization of the development strategy that Mahatma Gandhi

had suggested many decades earlier is now accepted by experts on “The Earth provides
development across the world. This is based on his concept that the world enough to satisfy every
could support people’s needs but not their greed. man’s need, but not any
man’s greed”
-Mahatma Gandhi-
Indira Gandhi said in the Stockholm Conference
in 1972 that poverty was the greatest polluter.

While the super-rich nations had serious environmental

problems, the under-developed in Asia, Africa and South
America had a different set of environmental problems linked to
poverty.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS

• Large projects like dams, mining and highway construction have bad
effects on the ecosystem
• These projects lead to large scale dumping and waste mismanagement that
leads to environmental degradation.
• In the current day any new projects of large size need to publish a summary
report of an EIA or Environmental Impact Assessment and conduct a public
hearing.
EIA-ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
An activity designed to identify and predict the impact on the biophysical
environment and on man’s health and well-being, of legislative proposals, policies, programmes,
projects and operational procedures, and to interpret and communicate information regarding the
effects.
The objective of an EIA
Inform the decision-makers of the likely environmental effects of activities.
Involvement
• Provides an opportunity to those directly affected by a project to express their views on the
environmental and social impacts of the proposal.
• Brings about transparency in the environmental clearance system.
• Prove to be important for assessment of environmental impact of development projects and
actually support the decision-making processes that will be so crucial to the protection of both the
environment and human health.
• Public participation is vital for resolving or reducing environmental disputes as they are more aware towards
their surrounding environment.

Public participation is based on the principle that dialogue between decision-makers and the public benefits
both parties.
• It allows the public to gain an understanding of government decisions and policies, while providing the
government with input to help them design and implement a better and legitimate trade process.
• Effective public participation requires not only dialogue, but also the provision of relevant information and
the allocation of adequate resources in advance.
• If used properly, public deliberation workshops, online public deliberation, educational programs, and media
outreach, among others, can enable government to effectively engage the general public and establish a
more mutually beneficial government and citizen relationship.
