The Official SAT Study Guide - Test 1

The document provides an overview of the types of math concepts covered on the SAT Math Test, including Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math. It also reviews strategies for answering grid-in questions, such as only entering one of the possible correct answers in the simplest form without rounding. Finally, it offers tips for studying for the SAT Math Test such as taking a practice test, memorizing formulas, eliminating careless mistakes, and using strategies like drawing diagrams or replacing variables with numbers.

Overview
Type of Math

• Heart of Algebra: focuses on linear equations, systems of linear

equations, and the relationships between them
• Problem Solving and Data Analysis: focuses on ratios, percentages,
and proportional reasoning.
• Passport to Advanced Math: focuses on complex equations and
functions typically needed in a STEM-based—science, technology,
engineering, and math—career.
• Additional topics on math, like geometry, trigonometry, radian
measure, and complex numbers

Entering your answers on the Answer sheet

Appeared symbols: 0 to 9, a decimal point, and a

slash (/). No negative sign, the answer to every grid-I
question is a positive number or zero

Be aware that you will receive credit for a correct

answer no matter where you grid it

Never round off your answer

Never write a 0 before the decimal point

Never reduce fractions  waste of time

Be ware that you can never enter a mixed number

Enter your answer in the simplest way

Gird in only one of the acceptable answers

Keep in mind that there is no penalty for a wrong

answer to a grid-in question

Grid every answer very carefully

Write each answer in the boxes

The smallest number that can be gridded is 0, the

largest is 9999. No number greater than 100 can have
a decimal point. The largest number less than 100
that can be gridded is 99.9

Draw a Diagram

If a Diagram is Drawn to scale,

trust it, and use your eyes
Remember that every diagram that appears on the SAT has
been drawn as accurately as possible unless you see
“Note: Figure not drawn to scale” written below it
If a Diagram is not drawn to
scale, redraw it to scale, and
then use your eyes

Add a Line to a Diagram

Test the choices, starting with C

Replace Variables with number

1.Replace each variable with an easy-to-use number
2.Solve the problem using those numbers
3.Evaluate each of the five choices with the number you
picked to see which choice is equal to the answer you
obtained
Eliminate Absurd Choices, and
guess
When you have no idea how to solve a problem, eliminate
all the absurd choices and guess from among the
remaining ones

Don’t do more than you have to

Pay attention to Units

As you read the question underline exactly what you are

being asked.

• What is a Margin of Error?

 The margin of error is the range of values below and
above the sample statistic in a confidence interval. The
confidence interval is a way to show what the
uncertainty is with a certain statistic
• The "mean" is the "average" you're used to, where you
add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of
numbers
• The "median" is the "middle" value in the list of numbers.
To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in
numerical order from smallest to largest, so you may have
to rewrite your list before you can find the median
• The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no
number in the list is repeated, then there is no mode
for the list
• The "range" of a list a numbers is just the difference
between the largest and smallest values.
• “Standard deviation”  is a measure that is used to
quantify the amount of variation of a set of data values
To calculate the standard deviation of those numbers:
• Work out the Mean (the simple average of the numbers)
• Then for each number: subtract the Mean and square
the result.
• Then work out the mean of those squared differences.
• Take the square root of that and we are done!
Slide Title
A 30-60-90 triangle is a special right triangle that always has
degree angles of 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees.
Because it is a special triangle, it also has side length values which
are always in a consistent relationship with one another.

The basic 30-60-90 triangle ratio is:

Side opposite the 30° angle: x
Side opposite the 60° angle: x * √3
Side opposite the 90° angle: 2x
