HISTORY
WHAT IS HISTORY?
The word "history" means the search for knowledge
and truth, a searching to find out.
It is any integrated narrative or description of past
events or facts written in a spirit of critical inquiry.
The term history was derived from the Greek word
"historia" which means inquiry or knowledge acquired
from investigation.
NATURE OF HISTORY
History is the study of the present in the light of the
past.
History is the study of man.
History is concerned with man in time.
History is concerned with man in space.
History provides an objective record of happenings.
History is multisided.
NATURE OF HISTORY
History is a dialogue between the events of the past
and progressively emerging future ends.
History is not only narration but it is also an analysis.
Continuity and coherence are the necessary requisites
of history.
History is relevant.
History is comprehensive.
WHY STUDY HISTORY?
1.To learn about the past.
2.To understand the present.
3.To appreciate our heritage in a broad
perspective.
4.To acquire a background for critical thinking.
HISTORY IS A MYSTERY TO BE SOLVED.
Finding out about history is a lot like trying to solve a
mystery
• You must look for clues.
• You must interpret those clues
• You must bring all the clues together to shed light on
each other.
• You must reinterpret each clue every time you find a new
clue.
• You must then try fill in the gaps and come to an
educated conclusion.
SOURCES
It is anything that gives us a clue
about history.
Categories of Sources
Primary source
Secondary source
PRIMARY SOURCE
It is regarded as the source of “best evidence”.
These are the original documents or remains, the
first witnesses to a fact.
