TRIVIA
Mambo is a word with Afro-Latin connections. Most common meanings are:
• Mambo (rhythm): a Cuban or AfroCuban musical rhythm and its associated dance.
Invented around 1950 in Havana.
• Mambo section: a musical bridge or section in some kinds of Cuban (and Caribbean)
music.
• Mambo (Voodoo): A Haitian word for a Voodoo priestess
MEANING
• Mambo is a Latin dance of Cuba which was developed in the 1940s when the
music genre of the same name became popular throughout Latin America. The
original ballroom dance which emerged in Cuba and Mexico was related to the
danzón, albeit faster and less rigid. In the United States, it replaced rhumba as the
most fashionable Latin dance. Later on, with the advent of salsa and its more
sophisticated dance, a new type of mambo dance including breaking steps was
popularized in New York. This form received the name of "salsa on 2", "mambo on 2"
or "modern mambo".
MEANING
• Mambo dance was originated in Cuba in 1938. It was born directly from the Cuban
son and the Cuban rumba, and from the fusion of other Afro-Cuban musical
elements.
• The word “mambo” means conversation with the gods in the Kilongo language, one
of the African languages that came to Cuba. The term got popular from African to
the Caribbean.
BASIC STEPS OF MAMBO
• Start with our left foot and we're going to break to our left, guys, starting on count two,
three, four and now to our right.
• Now normally we're starting this with our forward and backward basic, so let's take a look
at how we get into this side action from the basic forward and back. And two three, four.
• Now, gentlemen, we're just going to give a slight inclination here through the hands to the
lady to move to her right. Two three, four, our left and closing and continuing back into
our forward basic.
• Always ending to our right, gentlemen, and to the lady's left to close the feet and begin
again with our left leg for the gentlemen, and our right leg, ladies, moving back, two,
three, four.
