Baggage Handling: by Sharmin Naz 1 Year Mba in Aviation Management

Baggage handling involves transporting passenger luggage from check-in to aircraft storage and then to baggage claim. A baggage handling system uses conveyor belts to move bags through the airport. It transports checked bags from check-in to loading areas and from aircraft to baggage claim. The main jobs of a baggage handling system are to move bags from check-in to departure gates, between gates, and from arrival gates to baggage claim. Passengers can check bags which are transported in the aircraft hold or carry smaller cabin or personal items onto the plane. Bags go through screening and sorting before being loaded onto planes and delivered to baggage claim after arrival.

AVIATION MANAGEMENT
BAGGAGE HANDLING

Baggage handling is the process of

transporting passenger luggage
from a check-in counter at a
departure airport, onto a plane
cargo hold and then to a collection
point at an arrival airport.
BAGGAGE HANDLING SYSTEM

A baggage handling system is a type of conveyor system installed

in airports that transports checked luggage from ticket counters
to areas where the bags can be loaded onto airplanes. It also
transports checked baggage coming from airplanes to baggage
claims or to an area where the bag can be loaded onto another
airplane.
A BAGGAGE • Move bags from the check-in area to the
HANDLING departure gate
• Move bags from one gate to another
SYSTEM HAS during transfers
THREE MAIN • Move bags from the arrival gate to the
JOBS: baggage-claim area
TYPES OF BAGGAGE
As a passenger, you are usually allowed to take 3
types of baggage:
1. CHECKED BAGGAGE:
• Checked baggage is also referred to as cargo
luggage.
• Suitcase with linear dimensions up to 158cm and
weight from 15 to 30 kg.
• It is the baggage that is transported in the cargo
hold of the aircraft. You have to check it in and
pick it up after landing.
2. CABIN BAGGAGE:
• Also known as carry-on or hand
luggage.
• It can be a small backpack or a suitcase
• You take it through security into the
plane and keep it with you – either
under the seat or in the overhead
compartment.
• Carry your valuables in cabin baggage.
3. PERSONAL ITEM:
• This usually refers to a smaller
piece of cabin baggage, which you
can carry for free.
• You will also take it through
security into the plane and keep it
with you for the whole trip.
• It can be small backpack, camera
bag or laptop case.
Permitted and Prohibited Items on Flight
HOW DOES BAGGAGE HANDLING
WORK?
 CHECK- IN:
 You will be asked to weigh your bag
 Attach a tag to it which will have a 10-digit barcode
A sticker is attached to your passport with details of your baggage
If you have checked-in online you will need to drop the baggage at
bag drop off point. You will be asked to attach tag and place it on
conveyor belt
SORTING AND STORING :
After check-in, baggage will go off on a conveyor belt
These baggage will go off to the sorting office where staffs will sort
them to go off to right flight or will be stored ready for your flight at a
later time.

SCREENING:
Your baggage will be screened at security checkpoint.
 The bags pass through x-ray scanners that examine them, and with
the help of both automated and manual recognition systems detect
unusual and banned objects.
 CONVEYING:
The computer system send the baggage to its appropriate conveyor.
Many other 360 degree scanners are posted around different routes,
ensuring that the luggage is still on the right track.
Main types of conveyors are:
Pusher: this conveyor has many moving arms that can either stop,
allow or channel bags onto different routes.
Orientation: a camera scans the bag, determines which way it needs
to be oriented and uses the wheels to turn it.
90 transfer: this conveyor stops and starts quickly, moving in mainly
different directions, allowing bags to be sent any way.
DCV : Destination Coded Vehicles are autonomous carts that move
larger quantities of baggage from terminal to terminal, and load and
unload automatically.
Trolley: The bags are finally driven to the plane by trolley and loaded
into the hold.

 BAGGAGE CLAIM:
The final part of the baggage process is the collection carousel. If all
process goes well, your baggage will be delivered to a carousel
matching your flight number in the destination airport.
