Solid State
Storage Systems
and Removable
Hard Disk Drives
– Memory sticks or Flash memories (aka pen drives) use solid-state technology.
– Connect to a computer through USB ports.
– Advantages of memory sticks include, their small size and lightweight which
makes them convenient as a method for transferring files between computers.
They may also be used as small back-up devices for photos or music files.
Dongles
– Memory sticks used in complex or expensive software, such as an Expert
System, are called Dongles.
– The dongle consists of additional files which are needed to run the software.
Without this dongle, the software won’t work properly.
– Advantages –
– Prevents illegal or unauthorised use of the software
– Prevents copying of the software (since without the dongle, it is useless)
SD and XD Cards
– XD – eXtreme Digital
– SD – Secure Digital
– Are forms of solid-state memory used by digital cameras.
– The technology is essentially the same as memory sticks.
– These memory cards allow photos to be transferred from camera to computer
via the USB port.
– Many printers and computers also have card slots allowing the device to read
the memory cards directly.
Memory cards (SD and XD)
– Each memory card is made up of NAND chips
– Advantages
– Small
– Lightweight
– Can be used as back-up devices
– No moving parts
– No fan needed
– No heat generated
– Less power used
Removing memory cards/sticks
– All solid-state memories need to be handled with care.
– If they are removed from a device before being made safe, data on memory
card or stick can be corrupted or harmed.
– In extreme cases, the memory card or stick may become totally unusable.
– It is important to wait for the message: ‘it is now safe to remove your device’ if
plugged into a computer.
– In computers, while removing USB flash memories it is important to right-click
(on the file) and press eject to inform the computer, if it is working on the
memories in the background, to stop so that none of the files are corrupted.
Removable Hard Disk Drives
– Are hard disk drives that can be connected to the computer through USB ports.
As a result, they can be used as a back-up device or as another way of
transferring files between computers.
