Dengue Guidelines For Diagnosis, Treatmentprevention and Control

This document provides guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of dengue fever. It begins with an introduction describing dengue fever as an acute viral illness transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. It then outlines the etiology, describing dengue virus as an RNA virus from the Flavivirus genus. It also describes the life cycle of the Aedes mosquito and classifications of dengue including undifferentiated fever, classic dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. The document provides a diagnostic test flowchart and discusses prevention through mosquito control, personal protective measures and vaccines.

Introduction
 Dengue fever is an acute infectious viral disease, also known as break bone fever.

 It is a arthropod-borne (arboviral ) illness in human. It is caused by infection with 1 of the 4 serotypes of

dengue virus (DENV1,2,3,4), which is a Flavivirus (a genus of single-stranded non segmented RNA viruses).

 Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes and species aegypti and albopictus.

 Dr Benjamin Rush a professor of chemistry and medical theory at the UPEN, during the Philadelphia
epidemic 1779 -1780 , first described the dramatic symptoms of dengue as break bone fever.
Etiology
Dengue infection is caused by dengue virus (DENV), which is a single-stranded RNA
virus (approximately 11 kilobases long) with an icosahedral nucleocapsid and covered
by a lipid envelope. The virus is in the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, and the type
specific virus is yellow fever.
Dengue classification And Tests
Four dengue clinical
syndromes:
 Undifferentiated fever
 Classic dengue fever
 Dengue hemorrhagic fever
 Dengue shock syndrome

TESTS
 NS-1 AG detection
 RT- PCR Dengue hemorrhagic fever
 serology
Symptoms of Dengue and Diagnostic Test Flowchart
Dengue prevention
1.Mosquito control:
o Reducing breeding sites
o Larva control
o Use of insecticide

2.Personal protective measures:

A combination of chemically-treated gear and clothing and a strong chemical
repellent may be necessary in areas with high concentrations of disease-carrying
arthropods.

3.Vaccine:
CYD-TDV is a formulation of four chimeric yellow fever 17D-dengue vaccine viruses. It
is administered in three doses at months 0, 6, and 12.
