HYPOTHESIS TESTS – TWO SAMPLE

I. Comparing the Means of Two independent Populations

1. When you take a random sample from each of two independent populations, you almost always do not
know the standard deviation of either population.

2. Pooled-variance t test for the Difference between two Means

If you assume that the random samples are independently selected from two populations and that the
populations are normally distributed and have equal variances, you can use a pooled-variance t test to
determine whether there is a significant difference between the means.

2. t test for the Difference between two Means, assuming Unequal variances

 The separate-variance t test developed by Satterthwaite that uses the two separate sample variances.

 F test for the ratio of two variances is used to determine whether there is evidence of a difference in the
two population variances.
 The results of that test can help you decide which of the t tests—pooled-variance or separate-variance—is
more appropriate.

II. Comparing the Means of Two Related Populations

 Results of the first population are not independent of the results of the second population
 When you take repeated measurements from the same set of items or individuals or when you match
items or individuals according to some characteristic.
 In either situation, you are interested in the difference between the two related values rather than the
individual values themselves.
 Are new textbook prices at a local college bookstore different from the prices offered at a major online retailer?

Paired t test
 If you assume that the difference scores are randomly and independently selected from a population
that is normally distributed, you can use the paired t test for the mean difference in related populations to
8

determine whether there is a significant population mean difference.

IV. Compare the variances of two independent populations

Comparisons and analyze differences between two population proportions.
Z test for the Difference between two proportions
The ZSTAT test statistic is based on the difference between two sample proportions (p1-p2).
 To determine whether two independent populations have the same variability
 One important reason to test for the difference between the variances of two populations is to determine
whether to use the pooled-variance t test (which assumes equal variances) or the separate-variance t test
(which does not assume equal variances) when comparing the means of two independent populations.
 If you assume that each population is normally distributed, then the sampling distribution of the ratio
is distributed as an F distribution.
