Edible Vaccines

Edible vaccines are vaccines that are grown and expressed in edible plants and fruits. They were invented by Charles J. Arntzen and contain antigen proteins grown in genetically modified plants without the genes responsible for disease. Edible vaccines could reduce immunization costs, be safer by only containing antigen subunits, be needle-free, improve compliance for children, and allow for multi-component vaccines. However, challenges remain regarding antigen selection, efficacy, choice of plant species, dosage, safety, and public perception.

Edible Vaccines

INTRODUCTION
Have you ever thought about the idea of using plants
and fruits to create edible vaccines?
• Invented by Charles J. Arntzen
• Made up of antigens grown in genetically modified
plants
• Do not contain genes responsible for pathogenesis

METHODS
RESULTS
ADVANTAGES OF EDIBLE
VACCINES
• Reduces immunization expenses
• Safer (posses antigenic subunits only)
• Needle free
• Enhanced compliance with children
• Multi component ability
OBTACLES TO THE
PRODUCTION
• Antigen selection
• Efficacy in systems
• Choice of plants
• Delivery
• Dosage
• Safety
• Public perception
CLINICAL USE
• Tumor reactive monoclonal antibody
used to treat cancer
• Zona pellucida protein in tobacco
mosaic virus
• Vaccine against Alzheimer’s disease
using beta amyoild gene
• Chloroplasts being used for green

CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANTS
USED FOR EDIBLE VACCINES
• Plants should produce edible parts that can be
consumed uncooked
• Rich in protein
• Grow widely
• Be capable of being transformed by genetic
engineering
• Should not produce toxic products
