• Competitive exams in India are intended for recruiting the suitable


candidates for a right job and mainly held for public sector
organizations.
• The major aspire of these competitive examinations is to get suitable
and merit candidates from each society of India, irrespective of
whatever the religion, race, caste, region or gender one belongs to.
• Thus we can say that, Competitive exams are those in which best one
are selected among the rest of the candidates.

Commission(UPSC).
Competitive exams by UPSC are held for,

Out of many competitive exams, one of the major exam
conducted by UPSC is Civil Service Examination(CSE).

• The Civil Service Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive


examination in India conducted by UPSC for recruitment to higher
civil services of the Government of India, including the Indian
Administration service, Indian Foreign Service and Indian Police
Service.
EXAM PATTERN OF CIVIL SERVICE
EXAMINATION
UPSC conducts the Civil Service Examination in three phases namely:

 Preliminary Examination
Mains Examination
Personality Test (Interview)
PHASE 1-PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION.
• UPSC CSE Prelims consists of two papers namely General Studies I and
CSAT (Civil Service Aptitude Test). While CSAT is qualifying in nature,
the marks obtained in the General Studies paper determine your selection
for UPSC Mains. It means your score in the General Studies Paper will be
considered for the Prelims cutoff.

• Additionally, there is negative marking for the wrong answers. 1/3rd of


the marks allotted for the question would be deducted as a penalty for
marking the wrong answer. However, if you do not attempt the question,
there will be no deductions.

• Qualifying Nature- Candidates will have to score 33% to qualify CSAT.


SYLLABUS FOR PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

PAPER 1
For 200 marks of 100 questions, each question carries 2 marks.
The questions are related to the fields such as Indian polity and
constitution, Indian economy, Indian culture, History, General
Science, life science and science technology, Geography ,
environment and Current affair.

PAPER 2
For 200 marks of 80 questions each question carries 2.5 marks.
The paper comprises General Mental ability, Reasoning and
comprehension (Passage).
PHASE2-MAINS EXAMINATION
• The IAS Mains Exam consists of two types of papers viz qualifying
and merit-ranking. Paper A and Paper B namely the Language paper
and English paper will be qualifying in nature. The marks obtained in
these papers will not be added to marks that may determine your rank.
All the other papers will be evaluated for merit purposes.

PHASE 3-PERSONALITY TEST(INTERVIEW)

•The interview process is the last and final stage of the selection process. The
interview consists of 275 marks which makes the grand total of maximum
marks 2025. Some of the qualities that the board assess in a candidate are:
