New KE 33,664.02 N-M or Joule

This document contains 4 examples calculating the kinetic energy (KE) of vehicles moving at different speeds. In each example, the mass and initial KE at one speed are given, and the question asks to calculate the new KE if the vehicle is moving at a different, specified speed. The kinetic energy formula KE = 1/2 mv^2 is used to first calculate the mass and then determine the new KE at the specified final speed.

1. A 1200 lbs car moves 50 kph has 400 KJ of KE.

Estimate the new KE if it is moving

40 kph.
1kg = 2.2 lbs
Given:
M = 1200 lbs = 545.45 kgs
New KE if v = 40 kph = 11.11 m/s
40 km/hr x (1000m/1km) x (1hr/3600secs) = 11.11 m/s
Joule = N – m
N = kg x m/s2
KE = ½ mv2
New KE = ½ mv2
New KE = ½ (545.45 kgs) (11.11 m/s)2
New KE = 33,664.02 N-m or Joule
2. A 1500 lbs car travels at 30 mps has 350 KJ of KE. Estimate the new KE if it is moving
40 mps.
Given:
M= 1500 lbs = 681.82 kgs
V = 40 mps

New KE = ½ m v2
New KE = ½ (681.82 kgs) (40m/s)2
New KE = 545,456 N-m or Joule
3. A truck moves 60 kph of 400 KJ of KE. Estimate the new KE if it is moving 40 kph.

Given:
V = 60 kph = 16.67 mps
KE = 400,000 Joule
New KE if the v=40kph or 11.11mps?

New KE = ½ m v2

KE = ½ m v2
400,000 J = ½ m (16.67mps)2
m = 2879 kgs

New KE = ½ (2879 kgs) (11.11 mps)2

New KE = 177, 681 N-m or Joule
4. A truck travels at 45 mps has 350 KJ of KE. Estimate the new KE if it is moving 40
mps.

Given:
V = 45 mps
KE = 350,000 Joule
New KE if v=40mps?

Solution:
KE = ½ m v2
350,000 J = ½ m (45mps)2
m = 345.68 kgs

New KE = ½ m v2
New KE = ½ (345.68kgs) ( 40mps)2
New KE = 276,544 N-m or Joule
