Live Case Study - Sloping Roof

The document describes a sloping roof case study of a king post truss. It discusses: 1) The bottom chord of the king post truss acts as a tie beam to prevent the walls from spreading due to thrust from the principal rafters. 2) A vertical king post is used to prevent sagging of the tie beam in the center of the span. Struts connect the tie beam and principal rafters. 3) A ridge beam is provided at the roof apex to support the common rafters. The trusses are supported on stone or concrete bed blocks in the walls.

LIVE CASE STUDY – SLOPING ROOF

• In king Post truss, The Bottom chord of the truss acts as tie beam and this tie beam
receives the ends of the principal rafters and prevents the wall from spreading out
due to thrust.
• The vertical king post is used to prevent the sagging of tie beam at the centre of a
span. The Struts are connected to the tie beams and the principal rafters in the
inclined direction
• Ridge beam is provided at the apex of the roof to provide end support of the
common rafters. The trusses are supported on the bed blocks of stone or
concrete which are fixed in the supporting walls.
• The Spacing of King Post truss is limited to 3 m centre to centre. The truss is
suitable for spans varying from 5 to 8 metre. It is not suitable for the long span

The intention of House A is precisely to be able to
appropriate its surroundings and give its inhabitants a
WEST FACADE
way to “live” the lake. The “A frame” shape is used to
its fullest potential to make this possible. Therefore, it
was very important that the structure was present in
every space of the house. Additionally, the architects
wanted the structure to be a coherent element with
the houses functionality.

The sub-humid climate and the north facing views

made us seek solar orientation in other directions. In
order to counteract these conditions, we opened
lateral balconies –like a boats deck- that permitted us
to receive solar radiation in mornings and evenings. GROUND FLOOR PLAN
This also gave us the advantage to use the most acute
spaces of the house that otherwise would have been
unutilized. NORTH FACADE

The mix of natural materials like: stone, wood, steel,

and glass, together with the acute and high spaces of
the house give it a warm and contemporary feeling.

House A is a building of modern conceptualization

with local construction techniques and materials. It is
a very efficient contemporary steel structure adapted
to local construction techniques.

Passive House with Sundial
Architects: Kikuma Watanabe
Area: 148 m²

Construction: Fushimi builder’s office
Structure Design: Syunya Takahashi + D Environmental Design System Laboratory

This home in Japan is passive house in where a sundial is set. By adapting the
passive system the internal spaces support a comfortable environment where in
summer it is naturally cool and in the winter it is warm. This ecological technology
aids this passive system using the sun and the wind for an effective air conditioner.
With this built-in sundial, the time can be told through the line drawn by top light.
The process of constructing this feature went through three steps:

1. Designing the prototype of the passive house with sundial

At first we must plan the passive house as direct gain system. The window is based
on the south side where the eaves shut off the intense sunlight in summer while
receives it in winter. Meanwhile insulation has been installed in the walls. For
setting the sundial, the roof is inclined at the latitude of the site [34.60°]. Under
the roof half cylinder is installed, inclined at the same angle and above the center
of the cylinder, the top light is set where the time can be told through the position
of the line

2. Adapting to the site environment

The site has an irregular shape, and as a result of putting the sundial facing south,
there are a diverse number of views to the gardens. The site has a gentle slope
from west to east, and the floor level of kitchen, atelier, half area of living room is
at -1000mm from ground level. The main opening has been oriented to the east
where it faces onto the ponds, hills and historic scenery in the area.

3. Planning by orientation
The plan of passive house with sundial is divided into two areas. The brighter of
the two contains the living and kitchen. Meanwhile, the other is north facing area
in where the atelier is and between the two, small spaces such as the bath and
toilet are set along the east and west axis.
