what exactly is an argumentative
essay?
An argumentative essay is a written form of argumentation. It also presents evidence
for a claim to let the reader know why it is more favorable. This even shows why the
other side of an issue is unfavorable or less favorable. An argumentative essay
includes, like any other essay, an introduction, and conclusion.
Learning how to write an argumentative essay will help you to develop critical
thinking and research skills along with developing how to rationally defend a
position. These skills will help you progress academically and occupationally.
Argumentative essays have the following elements: claim, arguments, evidence,
counterargument, rebuttal, and conclusion. In this module, we will learn about the
argumentative essay including its elements and components.
The purpose of argument writing is to convince a reader that a point of view is valid
or to persuade the reader to take a specific action. Information is used, but it is
organized based on the major components of an argument. The first component of an
argumentative essay is the Introduction.

the essay.
Components of - this is called the “gateway” of an essay.

argumentative the essay and gives the reader's background
information about the topic.

2nd component-BODY
– it is the body paragraph where facts of the given thesis statements of the
essay are written.
- it is where the arguments are written to support the statements.
Example:
(1st Argument) Financial commuting costs for a bicycle are considerably
less than for a car. A brand new car costs a million pesos and it uses
expensive fuel to let it run and move, while a bicycle will only cost more
than one thousand pesos but does not need any fuel, and it uses body
energy to pedal and move.
3rd
component-REFUTATION/COUNTERA
RGUMENT
– it is the argument to refute earlier arguments and give weight to the
actual position.
Example: (Counterargument) Some say that riding a bike would increase
commuting time and decrease productivity. (Rebuttal) Commuting by
bicycle would mean avoiding rush hour traffic jams and helping them be
early or on time for an appointment.

Argument teaches us how to assess competing
assertions, as well as how to analyze evidence and
investigative methods. Argument teaches us to clarify our
thoughts and articulate them honestly and accurately, as
well as to consider the ideas of others respectfully and
critically. Additionally, understanding the important
elements in argument essays can help you construct more
logical arguments and ultimately write more persuasively.
