Factors of Polynomials 02

The document discusses factoring polynomials using the factor theorem. It explains the steps to use the factor theorem to find the factors of a polynomial, including finding the roots. Examples are provided to demonstrate factoring quadratic and cubic polynomials using this method.

FACTORS OF

POLYNOMIALS
YEAR 10
Learning Objectives
Students should be able to:

• Add, subtract and multiply polynomials.

• Divide polynomials

• The factor theorem

• Cubic expressions and equations

• The remainder theorem

Factor Theorem
• Factor theorem is commonly used for factoring a polynomial and
finding the roots of the polynomial. It is a special case of a polynomial
remainder theorem.

• As discussed earlier, a polynomial has a factor , if and only if, = 0.

• is called a “root” of the polynomial.

• It is one of the methods to do the factorisation of a polynomial.

How to Use Factor Theorem
The steps are given below to find the factors of a polynomial using factor theorem:

Step 1 : If , then is a factor of the polynomial .

Step 2 : If , then is a factor of the polynomial .

Step 3 : If , then is a factor of the polynomial .

Step 4 : If and , then and are factors of the polynomial .

Example
Consider the polynomial function

Solution:

The values of for which are called the roots of the function.

Solving the equation, assume , we get:

Example

Becauseand are factors of,and are the solutions to the equation , we can
also check these as follows:

If is the solution, then;

If the remainder is zero, is a polynomial of

By trial and error, the quadratic expression

has the value zero when ;

hence, is a factor.

By further trial and error, the complete factorisation is
