Physics Project: Magnetic Effect of Electric Current

This document discusses the magnetic effect of electric current. It begins by defining key concepts like magnets, magnetic fields, and how magnetic field lines are used to represent magnetic fields. It then defines electricity and electric current, and how electric current produces a magnetic field. An experiment showing a compass needle deflecting near a current-carrying conductor demonstrates this magnetic effect. Fleming's left-hand and right-hand rules prove that electric current produces a magnetic field. A solenoid, which is a coil of insulated copper wire, is used to produce a uniform magnetic field and demonstrate the magnetic field around an electric current.

MAGNETIC EFFECT OF ELECTRIC CURRENT

MAGNETS
A magnet is a object which attracts metals like iron, cobalt, nickel
etc… It has a special property of attraction and repulsion. A
magnet has two poles- the north pole and the south pole
WHAT IS MAGNETIC FIELD
The area around the bar magnet in which magnetic compass gets
influenced is called its magnetic field.  The magnetic field is the
region around a magnetic material or moving electric charge
within which the force of magnetism acts. It is caused due to the
motion of charges.

WHAT IS MAGNETIC FIELD

Magnetic field line is an imaginary line or tool used to represent
magnetic fields.  used to represent magnetic fields. They
describe the direction of the magnetic force on a north monopole
at any given position. A magnetic field is represented by a series
of lines around a magnet.
WHAT IS ELECTRICITY
• Electricity is the flow of electrical power or charge. We use
electricity in our daily life like we use electricity to light our
home, school,, office etc. We use a number of appliances in our
home which run on electricity fan, television, heater, radio, etc.

Electric current
An electric current is a flow of an electric charge between two
points or the rate of flow of electric charge or the amount of
charge flowing through a particular area in unit time. In reality,
electric current is flow of negatively charges particles called
electrons. An electric current is said to exist when there is a net
flow of electric charge through a region.  unit of electric current
is Ampere (A).
STRUCTURE OF ELECTROMAGNET

An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is

produced by an electric current. Electromagnets usually consist of wire
wound into a coil. A current through the wire creates a magnetic field
which is concentrated in the hole, denoting the center of the coil.
EXPERIMENT TO UNDERSTAND MAGNETIC EFFECT OF ELECTRIC CURRENT
The magnetic effect of electric current is known as electromagnetic effect. It is observed
that when a compass is brought near a current carrying conductor the needle of compass gets
deflected because of flow of electricity. This shows that electric current produces a magnetic
effect.
FLEMING’S LEFT AND RIGHT HAND
RULE
Existence of Fleming’s left hand rule and right hand rule
proves that electric current produces magnetic field
COMPONENT PROVING PRESENCE OF MAGNETIC
FIELD AROUND AN ELECTRIC CURRENT-

SOLENOID
WHAT IS A SOLENOID
When you wrap or make coil of insulated copper wire around
any thing like paper , your hand or any object it would be a
solenoid. We use solenoid to produce a uniform magnetic field.
Some example of solenoid are hard disk, MRI machine, etc.
MAGNETIC FIELD DUE TO FLOW OF CURRENT IN A
SOLENOID
Magnetic field lines are parallel inside the solenoid, similar to a bar magnet,
which shows that the magnetic field is the same at all points inside the solenoid
magnetic field of a solenoid flows from north pole to the south pole. The magnetic
field of a solenoid is very similar to the magnetic field of a bar magnet. The
magnetic lines force inside a solenoid is parallel to each other which means it
produces a uniform magnetic field.
