History of Cinema: Denis Prusakov 12.a

The history of cinema began in the 19th century with the development of photography and its ability to capture movement. The French brothers Louis and Auguste Lumiere are recognized as the inventors of cinema with their 1895 Cinematograph, which allowed the first public demonstration of moving images in Paris. Early films were short clips seen as entertainment, but the director Georges Melies expanded cinema as an art form by using scripts and special effects. The introduction of sound in 1927's film "The Jazz Singer" and color in 1939's popular film "Gone with the Wind" drove further technological developments in cinema.

History of cinema

Denis Prusakov 12.a

The history of cinema begins in the 19th century. Although photography as a way
of capturing still images appeared in the first half of the 19th century, in order to
make the process of shooting and reproducing movement possible, it was required
that photography could take place with short shutter speeds.
As a result, the French brothers Louis and Auguste Lumiere became recognized as the
inventors of cinema. The Lumiere equipment turned out to be very convenient, with its help it
was easy to show films on the big screen, which gave the success of their invention.
"Cinematograph" - that's what the Lumiere device was called.

The first public demonstration was given in Paris in March 1895.

Brothers Louis and Auguste

After the invention of Lumiere, there was no cinema yet. The pioneers who
created system for recording and reproducing images did not foresee all the
possibilities for using cinema. They believed that the main function of their
invention was to record and preserve chronicles for posterity. Others saw moving
pictures as just fun entertainment.
In their sessions, Lumières showed several short clips, the most popular of which
was a clip called "The Arrival of the Train." The train on the screen seemed to be
approaching the hall, which looked very realistic and made a strong impression on
the audience.

The initial period of cinema development
Soon the director of one of the theaters, Georges Méliès, became interested in
cinema. He was the first to appreciate the possibilities of cinema, seeing in it, first
of all, an excellent means of greatly expanding the possibilities of the stage. He
was the first to make films according to scripts, use many film-specific tricks and
special effects, and in general became one of the main founders of cinema as an
independent art form.

Society's attitude towards cinema is changing - from

perceiving it only as a form of entertainment to perceiving it as
a form of art.

Development of sound film
Until 1927, almost all films were "silent", they contained only the image, without
sound. In this year, the first system capable of recording and playing sound films
appears, but filmmakers have long feared a significant increase in the cost of film
production. In 1927, the American firm "Warner Bros." released the first film in
which the character on the screen is talking - "The Jazz Singer".
Color film development
The introduction of color into cinema was slower than the introduction of sound. In
1939, one of the first color films was shot in the USA, which gained immense
popularity - "Gone with the Wind", but the popularity of color films over black-and-
white began to take shape only in the 70s. In addition, the characteristics of the
film are gradually improving, which allows you to film in more difficult conditions.
