What is an ESSAY?
An essay is a short piece of writing that tells a person’s thoughts
or opinions about a subject.
Parts of an ESSAY
•Introduction – beginning
•Body – contains the main message
•Conclusion – ending, summary
Types of Essay

Narrative Descriptive

NARRATIVE
ESSAY
-tells a story
Example:
“Last year was the first time I had ever been the new
at school. For the first four days, I was completely
alone. I don’t think I even spoke to a single person.
Finally, at lunch on the fifth day, Karen approached me
and sat down right next to me. She smiled at me and
from that we became good friends.”
DESCRIPTIVE
ESSAY
-paints a picture
on the reader’s
mind
Example:
“Sunset is the time of day when our sky meets
the outer space solar winds. There are blue,
pink and purple swirls, spinning and twisting
like clouds of balloons caught in a blender.”
PERSUASIVE
ESSAY
-convinces

Example:
Providing junk food in school cafeterias is just an all
around bad idea. We need to eat healthy food so we
can reach our fullest academic and physical
potential. The food we eat affects our body and
mind we need to take advantage of that.
EXPOSITORY
ESSAY
-informs readers
Example:
“On July 1969,the Apollo 11 spacecraft launched from
the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.Its mission was
to go where no human being had gone before-the
moon! The crew consisted of Neil Armstrong, Michael
Collins and Buzz Aldrin.”

Topics are also given for each type of essay but
you have the free will to select other topics. Use a
pad/yellow paper in writing your essay. You will
be graded using a rubric.

topics below.
Narrative essay: tell me your experience at home during the
lockdown.

Descriptive essay: describe a perfect summer vacation to you.

Persuasive essay: convince your readers and persuade them that


every student must help protect earth.

Expository essay: explain the different types of essays and their


differences
