Loading Standards of Bridges, IRC Loading
Loading Standards of Bridges, IRC Loading
standards
The standard IRC loads specified in IRC: 6- 2000 are grouped under
four categories as detailed below:
i) IRC Class AA Loading- All bridges located on National Highways
& State Highways is to be designed for this heavy loading.
ii) IRC Class 70 R Loading- The loading consists of following three
types of vehicles:
a) Tracked vehicle of total load 700 kN with two tracks , each
weighing 350 kN.
b) Wheeled vehicle comprising 4 wheels, each with a load of 100
kN , totaling 400 kN.
c) Wheeled vehicle with a train of vehicles on seven axles with a
total loads of 1000 kN

iii) IRC Class A Loading
a) Consists of a wheel train comprising a truck with trailers of
specified axle spacing & loading.
b) Heavy duty truck with two trailers transmits loads from 8 axles,
varying from minimum 27 kN to max. 114 kN.
c) Class A loading is a 554 kN train of wheeled vehicles on 8 axles.
d) The Impact has to be allowed as per the formulae recommended
in IRC: 6- 2000.
e) The Impact factor is inversely proportional to the length of the
span & is different for steel & concrete bridges.
f) This type of loading is recommended for all roads on which
permanent Bridges & Culverts are constructed.

iv) IRC Class B Loading
a) Similar to Class A loading except the axles loads are
comparatively of lesser magnitude.
b) The axle load 332 kN train of wheeled vehicles on 8
axle.
c) This type of loading is adopted for temporary
structure & Timber Bridges.
d) Combinations of different types of live loads are
recommended for design of Bridges in Clause 2007.4
of IRC: 6-2000.

b) IRC Class AA or 70 R Loadings –
For span less than 9 m
i) For tracked vehicle- 25% of span upto 5 m linearly reduced
to 10% for span of 9 m.
ii) For Wheeled vehicle- 25%
For span 9 m & above
For tracked vehicles- For RC bridges, 10% up to span of 40 m & in
accordance with standard figures for span exceeding 45 m is
obtained.
For steel bridges, 25% for spans up to 23 m & as per standard
Curves for spans exceeding 23 m is obtained.

INDIAN LOADING BRIDGE LOADING
STANDARDS
Various Loads & Forces to be considered in design of bridge members are:
i) Dead & Live loads
ii) Impact Load
iii) Longitudinal Force
iv) Thermal Force
v) Dynamic Effects
vi) Centrifugal force due to curvature of track
vii) Temperature & Frictional effects
viii) Racking Forces
ix) Wind & Earthquake Forces
x) Erection Forces &
xi) Frictional resistance of expansion bearings.
IRS Bridge Rules recommends the use of equivalent uniformly distributed loads ( EUDL)
on each track & also coefficient of dynamic augment (CDA) for spans varying from 1 to
130 m for both BG & MG as shown in standard Tables.
