Type of hot work to be carried out

Details of hot work to be carried out

Contractor’s detail

Hazard and Risk identification by dept./safety team

Review/Inspection by safety officer

Additional Safety Precautions to be taken

Precautions to be taken

Obtain work permit

Relocate all combustible at least 35 feet (10.7 m) from the work site

Cover the materials if can not be moved

Fire watchers shall be made available for hot work

Work area is marked “WORK IN PROGRESS”

Provide suitable means of egress check and check that all emergency procedures are in place

Provide PPEs
Roles of Fire Watcher

Trained to use Fire fighting extinguishers

Authorized to stop the work in case of abnormality
Familiar with facilities for raising an alarm in the event of a fire
After Completion of work Observe for at-least half an hour to detect & extinguish possible smouldering fires
Welding Machine Nomenclature
Precautions for Welding
• Ensure that Welding machine is properly earthed and ELCB is provided

• Check for damage to insulation of cables, holder, gun

• DO NOT carry holder and earthing together when machine is ON

• DO NOT look at welding arc with naked eye

• Avoid standing in water, on wet surfaces, or working with wet hands
• Wear Proper Protective Equipment (PPEs), such as rubber boots and rubber
pads, if performing arc welding in wet or high humidity conditions. Wear rubber
gloves under the welding gloves
Gas Cutting
Nomenclature
Precautions for Gas Cutting
• Ensure that Spark arrestor is used

• Move all the combustible or if not possible cover it

• Ensure the condition of hoses are good and away from flames,
heat sparks

• Maintain continuous fire watch during the period of work

• Keep all the cylinders in upright position and fasten them to

prevent them from falling or being knocked over

• Always turn the gas supply OFF when not in use

• Regularly check all connection and equipment for faults and

leaks with the help of soap solution
Flashback Fire

Flashback Fire are common, caused by a reverse

flow of oxygen in fuel gas pipe or fuel to
oxygen pipe and producing a explosive mixture
in hose. The flames can turn back through the
torch and may reach to cylinder.
How to Prevent Flashback Fire?

Ensure flashback arrestor is fitted on both sides

Purge the hoses before lightening the torch to remove

any potential explosive gas

Use a spark igniter to ignite the gas

Use correct gas pressure and nozzles for job

Keep all the equipment in good condition

Hot Work –
Work At Height
Additional Precautions

• If hot work is carried out

above ground level extra
precaution should be taken
to contain falling spatter
• Precaution should be taken
to prevent fall from height
