Formal & Informal Communication

Formal and informal communication can be categorized. Formal communication deals with official information sharing through defined channels and structures, while informal communication is more casual information sharing between friends and peers. Some key differences are that formal communication follows official hierarchies and protocols, whereas informal communication is free-flowing. Both types of communication serve important purposes in an organization, as formal communication provides the necessary structure and information flow, while the informal grapevine helps satisfy social needs and can aid in tasks.
