English BSWM BFS Presentation

Balanced fertilization is a strategy to address rising fertilizer costs and improve soil health. It involves applying both organic and inorganic fertilizers to crops. This lowers production costs through nutrient recycling while meeting crop nutrient needs. Organic fertilizers improve soil properties and inorganic fertilizers are the primary nutrient source. Using both fertilizer types restores soil health in a cost-effective way while boosting agricultural productivity and minimizing environmental impacts. The strategy provides guidelines on fertilizer amounts and timing of application tailored to crop yield targets. It aims to promote sustainable agriculture through balanced fertilization.

BALANCED FERTILIZATION

STRATEGY
Abonong Swak: Swak sa budget, swak sa palay
Issues and Concerns
1. Increasing cost of inorganic fertilizer while addressing nutrient needs of palay

High price of fertilizer Palay needs sufficient nutrient to

ensure good growth and uniform
panicle development
Cost of Urea (46-0-0)
2018 – PhP 948.00
2022 – PhP2,700 - 3,100

Issues and Concerns
2. Improving Soil Health

Majority of our lowland irrigated and rainfed rice

land are moderately low in fertility, estimated at
83%.

Lowland irrigated – about 650, 000 hectares

Ranfed – about 800,000 hectares

3
Benefits of Balanced Fertilization
• Application of both organic and inorganic fertilizers, thereby lowering production
cost through nutrient recycling and reducing application of inorganic fertilizer

• The organic fertilizer improves soil properties (biological, physical and chemical)
whereas, the inorganic fertilizers are the primary source of nutrients for plant
growth

• The use of combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer restore soil health,
cost efficient, improve agricultural productivity and minimize impact to the
environment.

• Production cost saving of PhP 2000-4000 per hectare

4
Benefit of using Organic Fertilizer/Compost

IMPROVED SOIL PHYSICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL

PROPERTIES

• Soil structure
• Water holding capacity
• Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) or the ability of soil to hold or retain
nutrients
• Soil microorganisms and Microbial Activity
• Soil carbon content/Soil Organic Matter
• Source of macro and micronutrient

5
IS THE BFS FOR RICE CROP ONLY?
The BFS is beneficial for all kind of crops to restore soil health.
The BFS prevent soil mining or nutrient imbalance due to
prolong used of inorganic fertilizers.

PROTOCOL FOR ADAPTIVE BALANCED
FERTILIZATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

1. Reduce chemical fertilizer with equivalent amount of

organic fertilizer per DA Memo Order no. 74 s. 2021
2. Refer to BSWM fertilizer guide map and apply required
amount and replace with inorganic fertilizer using rule
no. 1
3. Incorporate the use of biofertilizer in the
recommendation and apply according to instruction. This
will enhance the decomposition and mineralization of
nutrients in the soil and organic fertilizer.
11
PROTOCOL FOR ADAPTIVE BALANCED
FERTILIZATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
4. Enhance nutrient efficiency of fertilizer applied through
appropriate method of application and strict monitoring
to conform with time of fertilizer application. Use of
tools such as leaf color chart (LCC) and identification of
critical phenological stages of rice for monitoring. There
are available apps such as: LCC, MOET App, Rice Crop
Manager Advisory Service (https://rcm.da.gov.ph/),
Weather-rice-nutrient integrated decision support
system WeRice (https://werise.irri.org/) Organic based
PalayCheckTM. 12
PROTOCOL FOR ADAPTIVE BALANCED
FERTILIZATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

5. Use of combine harvester to distribute agricultural waste

during harvest.
6. Incorporate agricultural wastes during land preparation for the
next cropping season. It is estimated that 5 tons of rice straw
can be generated in one hectare of rice land. Spray with
trichoderma solution to speed up the decomposition.
7. Compute for savings; from reduced fertilizer application and
from increase yield.

WHAT is Balanced Fertilization Strategy?
The Balanced Fertilization Strategy (BFS) is a science-based farming method
which focused on the use of cost-efficient and proper combinations of organic and
inorganic fertilizers to sustain the increases in rice productivity.

BFS addresses concerns on soil fertility and plant nutrition not only to maximize
crop yields but also to produce/maintain healthy soils and reduce production cost.

BFS is the key to improve fertilizer use efficiency; refers to the application of plant
nutrients in optimum quantities in the right proportion through appropriate methods
at the time suited for a specific crop and agro-climatic condition; and leads to soil
health building
