Jet Propulsion

The document discusses different types of jet engines. It describes how jet engines work by taking in air and accelerating it through a compressor before adding fuel and igniting it in the combustion chamber. The expanding gases then power a turbine which drives the compressor and is ejected through a nozzle for propulsion. The main types discussed are turbojet engines which use all air for thrust, turbofan engines which use a fan to provide most thrust with a smaller portion going through the core, and turboprop engines where the turbine turns a propeller for thrust generation.

JET PROPULSION

• Components

• Types of Jet Engine

• Applications
INTRODUCTION

 Jet engine is nothing but a gas turbine.

 It works under the principle of “ Newtons third law”.

 It states that “for every action force, there is an equal and opposite

force”.

 It operates like toy balloon

How a JET ENGINE works ?

 Jet engine move the airplane forward with a great force that is produced by a
tremendous thrust and causes the plane to fly very fast.

 AIR INTAKE  COMPRESSOR FUEL BURNER COMBUSTION CHAMBER

TURBINE  PROPELLING NOZZLE
TYPES OF JET ENGINEERS

• TURBO JET

• TURBO FAN

• TURBO PRO

• TURBO SHAFT
TURBOJET

 The turbojet engine is a reaction engine

 Substantial increases in thrust can be obtained by employing an afterburner

 Turbine used to drive the compressor

 All intake air passes through the combustion chamber and exits through the
nozzle

 All thrust produced by hot, high-speed exhaust gases

TURBO FAN:
The objective of the sort of bypass system is to increase thrust without increasing fuel consumption

It achieves this by increasing the total air-mass flow and reducing the velocity within the same
total energy supply

 75% Of thrust produced by the fan

 A large propeller in the intake cowl, in front of compressor.
 Dramatically increases the amount of air pulled in the intake.
 Only a small percentage passed through the engine, the rest of cold air is Bypassed.
 Part of the thrust through the hot exhaust gases and part by the cold bypassed air. Produces cooler
exhausts and quieter
 engines.
 High by-pass ratio are most commonly used in larger commercial aircraft.
TURBO PROP:

 A turboprop is a jet engine attached to a propeller.

 Modern turboprop engine are equipped with propeller that have a smaller
diameter but a large number of a blades for efficient operation at much higher
flight speed.
 A turboprop engine is a turbine engine that drives an aircraft propeller.
A turboprop consists of an intake, reduction
gearbox, compressor, combustor, turbine, and a propelling nozzle.
  Air enters the intake and is compressed by the compressor. Fuel is then added
to the compressed air in the combustor, where the fuel-air
mixture then combusts.
 The hot combustion gases expand through the turbine stages, generating power
at the point of exhaust.
