thoughts about their future with AI
Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) is an experience where computer generated sensory
information like visual objects, sounds and touch enhance the real-world
environment also called physical environment. Using AR, we can add overlay of
computer generated sensory information to real world or remove real world
objects by masking them. The look and feel of such computer generated
sensory information is such that, it looks object and computer generated object.
to seamlessly interwoven in to real world and difficult to differentiate which is
real world
Al plays very important role to make AR possible. Techniques such as object
detection, distance of object from the person who is viewing the object for size
adjustment, colour detection, light detection to match the computer generated
object to blend with same light intensity of real world, 3D rendering spaces are
only possible though advanced computer vision techniques.
Group Activity 1 –AR Team
It is likely you would have seen some AR
(Augmented reality) already in your day to day
life. List down AR experiences you would have
had and write a short note/
presentation/drawings, in future what areas of
your day to day life can be using AR
Autonomous vehicle
A vehicle which can sense its environment like humans do and navigate through the environment with little or no
human input. For a vehicle to drive by itself, it needs to have sensory functions like humans and cognitive
capabilities like object recognition, sound inference, memory, logic, and the abilities to take decisions and to learn
from mistakes. Autonomous vehicles are fitted with numerous sensors to capture data of its surroundings. Some of
them are Radar, GPS, Lidar, camera, odometer, passenger condition evaluation, vehicle condition evaluation and
more.
These devices generate massive amounts of data of the real-world and data is usually sent to sensor fusion engine
control unit (ECU). ECU integrates data from various sensors and further sends to Intelligent Al enabled agents
residing inside the vehicle or on the cloud to make sense of data and make decisions. The decision from intelligent
agents is sent back to the vehicle control units like steering, brakes, accelerator, head lamp, indicators, air bags,
etc.
These vehicle control units are programmed to behave in certain way based on direction from intelligent agents,
e.g., if vehicle camera detects the Red traffic signal and a zebra crossing and the Radar detects, for example, a
zebra crossing, for example, 50 metres away, the intelligent agents calculates the time required to reach zebra
crossing at the current vehicle speed and sends a signal to the vehicle control units to apply brakes
Currently available autonomous vehicles still have steering wheels, brakes and accelerators as a human is
expected to sit behind them and take control of vehicle in emergency situations. But Al techniques like Deep
learning, neural networks is playing a Important role in enabling Level-5 autonomous vehicles which can handle
emergency situations on its own, thus enabling true autonomous vehicles.
Group Activity 2 – AV team
Write a short note in future what types of
autonomous vehicles will be seen on our
streets, what changes needs to be done for
existing city infrastructure to accommodate
autonomous vehicles
AI Personal Assistants
You would have seen business CEOs or top government ministers having personal assistants.
Personal assistants (PAs) help their bosses in various day to day functions like scheduling meetings,
arranging business trip itineraries, replying to emails, proving research reports and more.
Imagine instead of only selected people who can afford having PAs, now every person can have
their own PA's !. This is now possible and we are already seeing initial versions of Al enabled digital
personal assistants in market like Apple Siri, Google Assistant and more. These Al enabled systems
have ability to book a cab, play our favourite music or movie, answer questions, provide news and
weather updates, call or text on our behalf to your near and dear ones etc.
Al techniques such as Knowledge graph, Natural Language processing, Natural language generation
techniques, recommendation engines are pushing what personal assistants can do. These digital
assistants typically live in our phones or home devices and always learning about your preferences
and dislikes. These devices are being connected with sensors like home sensors, vehicle sensors,
body sensors. In future these instead of providing just information about we ask, might start
recommending, calling some of our friends in our voice and enabling real life conversations.
Group Activity 3 – PA Team
Write a short note about what tasks you would
like your own AI enabled personal assistant to
do and which tasks it shouldn’t do. What
information about you should PA learn and what
information should be kept confidential.

To identify leverage points which

are appropriate for achieving
SDGs using AI solutions.
Take a look at the pictures and try to give the
theme of each picture: you have 5 minutes.
Sustainable Development
 Economic development of the nation without the
depletion of its natural resources.
 Objective : To satisfy the needs of today without

compromising the needs of tomorrow.

 In 2015, the United Nations has defined 17 Sustainable
Development goals (SDGs) .
 The SDGs are intended to be achieved by the year 2030.

elopment-goals/
Ask Yourself
How AI can help in achieving SDG goals?
AI has the potential to
 Process large amount of data with faster processing speed
 Understand patterns and trends in the larger datasets
 Predict future trends
 Learns from the data patterns which can be used in similar

situations.
 Process complex datatypes such as images, audio, video and

object detection

Goal #3: Good Health & Well being

As per the sources, AI is promising to change the

way workplaces operate, but will it be a force for
good or disrupt workplace culture in negative ways?
With the expectation that AI will create a $190.6
billion market by 2025, it could be a tool used to
provide healthier, more productive, and accessible
work environments for all employees.

AI Ethics
Let us now assume that the car has hit the boy who came in
front of it. Considering this as an accident, who should be held
responsible for it? Why?
1. The person who bought this car
2. The Manufacturing Company
3. The developer who developed the car’s algorithm
4. The boy who came in front of the car and got severely
injured
AI ethics
Ai is a powerful tool. It can be used in ways that can affect the
society positively or negatively.
Data Privacy
 Where do we collect data from?
 Why do we need to collect data?
1. When you are talking to your friend on a mobile network or on an app like
WhatsApp. You tell your friend that you wish to buy new shoes and are
looking for suggestions from him/her. You discuss about shoes and that is
it. After some time, the online shopping websites start giving you
notifications to buy shoes! They start recommending some of their
products and urge you to you buy some.
2. If you search on Google for a trip to Kerala or any other destination, just
after the search, all the apps on your phone which support advertisements,
will start sending messages about packages that you can buy for the trip.
3. Even when you are not using your phone and talking to a person face-to-
face about a book you’ve read recently while the phone is kept in a locked
mode nearby, the phone will end up giving notifications about similar
books or messages about the same book once you operate it.
AI Bias

1. Majorly, all the virtual assistants have a female voice. It is

only now that some companies have understood this bias and
have started giving options for male voices but since the virtual
assistants came into practice, female voices are always
preferred for them over any other voice. Can you think of some
reasons for this?
2. If you search on Google for salons, the first few searches are
mostly for female salons. This is based on the assumption that
if a person is searching fora salon, in all probability it would be
a female. Do you think this is a bias? If yes, then is it a Negative
bias or Positive one?
AI Bias
 AI Bias is a phenomenon that occurs when an algorithm
produces results that are systematically prejudiced towards
certain gender, language, race, wealth etc. and therefore
produces skewed or learned output.
 Sources of AI bias:
◦ Data
◦ Algorithms
◦ People
AI Access
AI creates unemployment
On one hand where AI is advancing and improving the lives of
people by working for them and doing some of their tasks, the
other hand points towards the lives of people who are dependent
on laborious jobs and are not skilled to do anything else.
 Should AI replace laborious jobs?
 Is there an alternative for major unemployment?
 Should AI not replace laborious jobs?
 Will the lives of people improve if they keep on being unskilled?
AI Access
 AI access can be acquired by two means:
◦ Data Availability- AI needs access to huge datasets so that it can
analyse it and draw conclusions and learn from it.
◦ Abilities – AI needs access to capable hardware to turn its learning into
useful action. Self-driven cars are examples of AI with right access.
AI for kids
A young boy in class 3 has got some Maths homework to finish. He is sitting
at a table which has the Google chat bot - Alexa on it, and he is struggling
with his homework. Soon, he starts asking Alexa to answer all his questions.
Alexa replies with answers and the boy simply writes them down in his
notebook. While this scenario seems funny, it still has some concerns related
to it. On one hand where it is good that the boy knows how to use
technology effectively, on the other hand he uses it to complete his
homework without really learning anything since he is not applying his brain
to solve the Math problems. So, while he is smart, he might not be getting
educated properly. Is it ethical to let the boy use technology to help in this?
Weaponization of AI
 AI weaponization means using AI to deliberately cause harm
on human beings by integrating it into the systems and tools
of national militaries.
 Is it good or bad?
 To what extent?

What will happen if National militaries are completely replaced

by AI machineries?
Conclusion
Conclusion Despite AI’s promises to bring forth new
opportunities, there are certain associated risks that need to be
mitigated appropriately and effectively. To give a better
perspective, the ecosystem and the socio-technical environment
in which the AI systems are embedded needs to be more
trustworthy
