Dynamo and It's Uses

The document discusses dynamos and their industrial uses. A dynamo is an electric generator that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy using rotating coils within a magnetic field. Early dynamos used permanent magnets to generate pulsing direct currents via Faraday's law of induction. Key developments included Hippolyte Pixii building the first dynamo in 1832 and Pacinotti replacing the axial coil design with a wrapped iron ring coil connected to a commutator. Dynamos produce direct current using commutators, while alternators produce alternating current using slip rings. Dynamos have been used in industrial processes and to power bicycle lights without batteries by capturing energy from wheel rotation.

DYNAMO AND

ITS INDUSTRIAL
USE
Here starts the
lesson!
What is
Dynamo?
An electric generator, or dynamo, is a
device which converts mechanical
energy into electrical energy. The
simplest practical generator consists
of a rectangular coil rotating in a
uniform magnetic field. The magnetic
field is usually supplied by a
permanent magnet.
Working
Principle of
Dynamo

● The function of the dynamo is to change

mechanical energy into electricity.

● The electric dynamo uses rotating coils of wire

and magnetic fields to convert mechanical
rotation into a pulsing direct electric current
through Faraday's law of induction.
Brief History Pixii’s Dynamos
of Dynamo - In 1832, Hippolyte Pixii, a French Instrument Maker
built the first Dynamo based on Faraday's Principles. It
used a Permanent Magnet which was rotated by a Crank.
Pixii found that the spinning magnet produced a pulse of
current in the wire each time a pole passed the coil.

The Woolrich Electrical Generator of 1844, now in Thinktank

, Birmingham Science Museum, is the earliest electrical
generator used in an industrial process.
Difference Between
Dynamo and Generator

TYPES OF
DYNAMO
Direct
Current
Generator
A dc generator is an electrical machine which converts mechanical
energy into direct current electricity. This energy conversion is based
on the principle of production of dynamically induced emf.

The dynamo was the first electrical generator capable of delivering

power for industry. The dynamo uses electromagnetic induction to
convert mechanical rotation into direct current through the use of a
commutator

A commutator is used in a DC generator. It is a metal ring with splits

that periodically reverses the electrical connections from the generator
coil while also reversing the current. Because it rotates, a simple loop
of wire automatically reverses the current it creates every half-turn,
and the commutator's purpose is to cancel out the impact of the coil's
rotation, guaranteeing that a direct current is created.
AC Generator
AC dynamo or generator is a mechanical
device that converts mechanical energy into
AC electrical power. In an AC generator,
the electrical current reverses direction
periodically. AC generators have slip-rings.
The output from AC generators is easy to
distribute using a transformer.
Uses of Dynamo
in Bicycle Rim Dynamo

● To power bicycle lights w/o having to rely on batteries.

● To avoid accidents during the night.
● Safer to use
● One can store energy for future use (incase the system
gets broken).

Hub Dynamo
Unlike a few battery systems, the riders can use it
whenever he wants.
● Batteries runs out and you won’t carry a setoff batteries
whenever you go out.
● Unlike non-biodegradable batteries, it does not harm
environment.
● Hub dynamos are lighter and easier to use.
● A dynamo and lights don’t get stolen as easily as battery Bottle Dynamo
lights w/c are mostly designed for easy removal.
Charging System
Using Dynamo:

● On earlier cars, the battery is charged by

a dynamo. A type of generator, and are
driven by a belt from the engine.

● A dynamo does not need a rectifier –

there is a voltage regulator in a separate
box, which has relays.
