Surveyors & Surveying in RPD

This document discusses surveying in removable partial denture fabrication. It defines surveying and surveyors, and describes their purpose in designing removable partial dentures that will have a successful prognosis. Two common surveyors, the Ney and Jelenko, are described and compared. Various surveying tools and their uses, such as analyzers, markers, gauges, and knives, are also outlined. Overall, the document provides an overview of surveying terminology, equipment, and techniques used in the design process for removable partial dentures.

SURVEYORS & Presented by:

SURVEYING IN RPD Demonstrator Prosthodontics
INTRODUCTION
• A partial denture will not succeed unless it is designed
and constructed in harmony with all the physiologic and
mechanical problems present in the patient’s mouth.

• Surveying and designing are important steps towards

achieving a successful restoration.

• A well-executed design serves as a blueprint for

fabrication of the removable partial dentures.

• Lack of plan, haphazard preparation, and lack of abutment

preparation are a few factors of partial denture failure.
TERMINOLOGIES (GPT-9)
SURVEY: the procedure of locating and delineating the contour and position of
the abutment teeth and associated structures before designing a removable
partial denture.

SURVEYING: and analysis and comparison of the prominence of intraoral

contours associated with the fabrication of a dental prosthesis.

SURVEYOR: a paralleling instrument used in making a dental prosthesis to

locate and delineate the contours and relative positions of the abutment teeth
and associated structures.
SURVEYOR
• An instrument used to determine the relative parallelism of two or
more surfaces of the teeth or other parts of the cast of a dental
arch.

• Primary purpose of surveying is to identify the modifications of

oral structures that are necessary to fabricate a removable partial
denture that will have a successful prognosis.
DESCRIPTION OF DENTAL
SURVEYOR
• Two most widely used dental surveyors: Ney and Jelenko.

• The Jelenko arm swivels, the whereas the Ney arm is fixed.
PURPOSES OF SURVEYING

• Surveying the diagnostic cast • Surveying ceramic veneer crowns

• Recontouring the abutment teeth on the • Placing intracoronal retainers
diagnostic cast • Placing internal rests
• Contouring the wax patterns • Machining cast restorations
• Measuring a specific depth of undercut • Surveying and blocking out the master cast
NEY SURVEYOR
The principal parts of the Ney surveyor are as follows:

1. Platform on which the base is moved

2. Vertical arm that supports the superstructure
3. Horizontal arm from which the surveying tool suspends
4. Table to which the cast is attached
5. Base on which the table swivels
6. Paralleling tool or guideline marker (this tool contacts the convex surface to be studied in a
tangential manner; the relative parallelism of one surface to another may thus be determined;
with substitution of a carbon marker, the height of contour may be delineated on the surfaces
of the abutment teeth and on areas of interference requiring reduction on blockout)
7. Mandrel for holding special tools
COMPARISON OF NEY AND
JELENKO SURVEYORS
Ney surveyor Jelenko surveyor

• Horizontal arm is fixed • Horizontal arm is movable

• Vertical arm is retained by friction • Vertical arm is spring mounted

• The shaft remains in any vertical position • Vertical arm when released returns to its
until it is moved again original position. It should be held against
spring tension

• Cast table is moved around surveyor • Cast table is fixed with the magnet in the
platform surveyor platform
ACCESSORIES / SURVEYING
TOOLS
1. Analyzing rod
2. Carbon (graphite) marker
3. Undercut gauges
4. Wax knife
5. Milling devices (with handpiece holder)
ANALYZING ROD

Analyzes undercut areas

Determine the parallelism of surfaces

without marking the cast
GRAPHITE MARKER
Moved around the tooth
and along the alveolar
ridge

Tip of the marker should

be level with the gingival
margin
UNDERCUT GAUGES
The shank and head should contact the cast simultaneously
WAX KNIFE
To blockout undesirable undercuts

To prepare guiding planes
