Math1 PPT 2

The document discusses instructional planning for teaching mathematics in primary grades. It describes the teaching cycle, which consists of 6 stages: identifying objectives, planning activities, implementing the plan, checking for understanding, reflecting on teaching, and assessing learning. Important elements for lesson planning are also outlined, including content, objectives, students, learning environment, and available resources. Two instructional planning models - ADIDAS and FIVE Es - are presented. ADIDAS consists of activity, discussion, input, deepening, activity, and summary. FIVE Es consists of engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate.

Consider the following scenarios and answer the
questions that follow.

Scenario 1
A teacher told the students, “Four glasses of water will fill this
pitcher.”
Scenario 2
A teacher provides a glass and lets the children pour water into the
pitcher. They are learning how much it takes to fill the pitcher.

In which scenario do you think will the students learn

better? Why do you think so?

1. What are the six common stages of the
learning cycle?

2. What do you think is the most important

stage of the learning cycle? Why do you
think so?

Teaching process is a cycle of repeating stages
until the students acquire an understanding of the
targeted concepts and skills. You go through the
same process over and over again, but each time
with a more informed objective and better
understanding of what it means to learn and
teach mathematics.

THE TEACHING CYCLE
1. Identify objectives
2. Plan activities
3. Implement plan
4. Check for understanding
5. Reflect on teaching

THE TEACHING CYCLE
1. Identify objectives
 What knowledge and/or skills do the
students need to learn?
2. Plan Instruction
 What strategies must be implemented for
the students to achieve the objectives
targeted in the previous stage?

THE TEACHING CYCLE
3. Implement plan
 This is the stage where you conduct the learning
activities that you have prepared during the planning
stage.
4. Check for understanding
 During the implementation of the lesson plan, you
must every now and then check whether the students
have understood what you have covered so far.

THE TEACHING CYCLE
5. Reflect on teaching
 Were the objectives achieved? Were the implemented
strategies effective? How can instruction be improved?
What do you need to do differently in order to achieve the objectives?
4. Assess learning and reflect on the result
 Usually through paper-and-pen examination. Some
authentic assessment may also be implemented. What
can you learn about the student learning and teaching
practice based on the results?

1.2 Things to Consider in Planning
Instruction in Mathematics in the Primary
Grades

O U R L A D Y O F T H E S A C R E D H E A R T C O L L E G E O F G U I M B A , I N C #IwillOvercome
Planning refers to the designing and preparation of
learning activities of students. In lesson planning,
the teachers thoughtfully contemplate about the
lesson objectives, the activities that will meet
these objectives, the sequence of those
activities, the materials needed, how long each
activity might take, how the class would be
managed during those activities, and the
evaluation method to assess how far the
objectives were met.
O U R L A D Y O F T H E S A C R E D H E A R T C O L L E G E O F G U I M B A , I N C #IwillOvercome
Important Elements in Lesson Planning
• Content
Research the subject matter that you will be
teaching. You should master the contents of your
lesson before you teach it. Master your content.
• Objectives
What specific knowledge and skills you want your
students to develop during the lesson or unit? In
planning your instruction, always consider both
knowledge and skills.
O U R L A D Y O F T H E S A C R E D H E A R T C O L L E G E O F G U I M B A , I N C #IwillOvercome
Important Elements in Lesson Planning
• Students
Get to know your students. Your goal should be to
meet the needs of students and offer them enabling
environments to learn their preferred way.
Students’ mindset. Students with fixed mindsets
believe that their math skills cannot be improved,
which results in underperformance in the subject.
Students with growth mindsets believe that they
can learn even in their failures.
O U R L A D Y O F T H E S A C R E D H E A R T C O L L E G E O F G U I M B A , I N C #IwillOvercome
Important Elements in Lesson Planning

• Students
Many studies have proven that students who have
a growth mindset perform better in school than
those who have fixed mindset. So, in planning your
lesson, you must consider how to encourage
growth mindset in class.

O U R L A D Y O F T H E S A C R E D H E A R T C O L L E G E O F G U I M B A , I N C #IwillOvercome
Important Elements in Lesson Planning

• Learning Environment
Physical environment
Social and Emotional environment
- Promote a positive environment
- Students are open to learning through the
activities you prepared and interactions with
their classmates

O U R L A D Y O F T H E S A C R E D H E A R T C O L L E G E O F G U I M B A , I N C #IwillOvercome
Important Elements in Lesson Planning

• Availability of resources
Take into consideration the instructional materials
that you will be needing before you write your
lesson plan.

ADIDAS
(Activity, Discussion, Input, Deepening,
Activity, and Summary)

Activity. The activity introduces the topic to

the students.
Discussion. The lesson proceeds with the
processing of the activity.

ADIDAS
(Activity, Discussion, Input, Deepening,

Input. Students would share the concepts

that they learned based on the activity and the
discussion.
Deepening. Ask questions that will engage
the students to critical and creative thinking.

ADIDAS
(Activity, Discussion, Input, Deepening,
Activity, and Summary)

Activity. Students verify what they have just

learned by solving mathematical problems.
Summary. The students are given an
opportunity to express what they have learned
verbally.

FIVE Es
(Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate,
and Evaluate)

Engage. Arouse the students’ curiosity.

Explore. Students are expose to different
experiences that will facilitate the discovery of
new concepts.

Explain. Students explain what they have

learned in Explore
Elaborate. Students expand their
understanding of the concepts by applying
what they have learned.

Evaluate. Lets the teacher and the students

evaluate their learning. The teacher can be
creative by implementing other evaluation
activities.
