Pile Driving Report

Pile driving involves using a heavy weight that slides vertically and is dropped onto a pile to drive it into the ground. This process ensures deep foundations can support heavy structures. Proper pile driving requires layout of boundaries, soil exploration, space for equipment and storage. Tests like PIT and PDA are used to evaluate pile quality, integrity and bearing capacity during and after installation. Issues like unexpected penetration depths, cracking or misalignment need to be addressed.

PILE DRIVING

Piles Driving?
 A pile driver is a device used to drive piles into soil to provide foundation
support for buildings or other structures. The term is also used in
reference to members of the construction crew that work with pile-
driving rigs.
One type of pile driver uses a weight placed between guides so that it can
slide vertically. It is placed above a pile. The weight is raised, which may
involve the use of hydraulics, steam, diesel, or manual labour. When the
weight reaches its highest point it is released, and hits the pile, driving it
into the ground.

 Pile driving is designed to ensure the structural integrity of deep

foundations and heavy load buildings or platforms.
PILE DRIVING PROCEDURES

 Layout for the Boundaries and Gridlines.

 Soil Exploration.
 Sheet Piling.
 Space Available for Storage of tools and Equip.
 Space for the Deliveries.
Pile Driving Test

 PIT(Pile Integrity Test)- A pile is a slender element cast in the

ground or driven into it. Since pile construction as well as the
final product are mostly invisible, engineers have often
questioned their integrity, i.e. their compliance with project
drawings and specifications. In fact, experience  has shown that
in piles, of all kinds flaws may occur. The purpose of integrity
testing is to discover such flaws before they can cause any
damage.
 PDA(Pile Driving Analysis)- Pile Driving Analyzer systems also
evaluate shaft integrity, driving stresses, and hammer energy
when monitoring installation. If you plan to use your PDA to test
non-driven piles make sure to read about that application as well.
FORMULA FOR THE NUMBER OF BLOWS
Problems
 Blow Count Is Above Pile Penetration Requirements- Soil analysis should accurately
predict the number of blows required to drive a pile to its planned depth, and if the
number of blows is substantially higher than expected, it indicates a problem with
either the driving system, the soil, or both.
 Piles Are Driving Significantly Deeper Than Estimated- When piles are driving
considerably deeper than expected, it may be because soil resistance at the time of
driving is lower than anticipated, or because the driving system performance is better
than anticipated.
 Blow Count for Bearing Piles Abruptly Changes or Decreases- blow count for a group
of pilings suddenly changes or decreases, first check the soil conditions using borings.
 Blow Count Is Slightly Lower Than Expected- blow counts are somewhat lower than
you expect, it is usually because soil resistance is lower than anticipated. Perform
restrike testing. Establish the setup factor, and drive to lower capacity.
 Blow Count Is Significantly Lower Than Expected- blow count to drive the pile is
much lower than expected, first review the soil borings. If they do not indicate soft
layers, the problem may be that the pile is damaged below grade.
 Previously Installed Piles Show Lateral Movement When New Piles Are Driven-
When existing piles move, it is often because of soil displacement as new piles are
driven.
 Piles Are Driving Out of Alignment- When piles move out of alignment tolerance, it
is often due to control issues with hammer-pile alignment or to soil conditions. If
due to poor hammer-pile alignment control, a pile gate, template, or fixed lead
system may improve the ability to maintain alignment tolerance.
 Piles Are Driving Out of Location- Piles that shift locations out of accepted tolerance
can also be caused by problems with hammer-pile alignment control or due to soil
obstructions.
 Deep Pile Obstructions Are Encountered- If deep obstructions are encountered
during driving, contact the engineer for remedial design.
 Concrete Piles Develop Partial Horizontal Cracks in Easy Driving- Cracks in
concrete piles are more common in hard-driving situations, but when they occur
during easy driving, check hammer-pile alignment because bending may be
causing the problem.
Testing

PIT (Pile Integrity Test)- Pile Integrity Test (PIT), or “low strain impact integrity

testing of deep foundation” is a widely used non-destructive test method for the
evaluation of pile quality, and integrity.

PDA (Pile Dynamic Analysis)- Dynamic load testing (or dynamic loading) is a

method to assess a pile's bearing capacity by applying a dynamic load to
the pile head (a falling mass) while recording acceleration and strain on
the pile head. ... For steel or timber piles, dynamic load testing can be done
during installation or after installation.
