Expressionism
• 20th century - artist felt that art should be
presented in a more personal expressive way of life, this was accepted by several group of artist, and was called expressionism. famous artist of expressionism • Edvard Munch - is the best known forerunner of expressionism. his early life • was tortured by sickness, death, insanity • unhappy love affairs and guilt Scream • Munch in his painting expresses fear. in his depiction something terrible must have happened.Munch was one of several expressionist who felt strongly painting could show people worrying and suffering as well as show the beautiful things in life. Wassily Kandinsky • started out as a realistic painter • first to make a truly abstract art in which color and form take on expressive life. • he believes that line and color have emotional properties capable of conveying heightened feelings. red for example was dscribed as the impression of giving a strong beat • green for thrill and yellow a capacity to attain heights. • as to lines Kadinsky believed that horizontal lines were cold and flat, • verticals were warm and strong • curved lines were mature • angular lines were youthful Victor Edades • National artist- revolt againts convention and tradition. • In a homecoming exibit he showed to a shock audience the " builders " its use of exaggerated features, dark tones and heavy brush strokes to express intense feelings. the builders • the acknowledge father of Philippine Modern art, depicted filipinos during the American occupation , a time of much industrial progress , in a struggle of getting on with the times. CUBISM • the cubist began to find the impressionist style to messy. they decided to paint objects as firm, solid forms, at same time as painting light and colors. • the cubist explored the idea of sticking down paper shapes to make a special kind of picture called collage.- this development is known as synthetic cubism. founders of cubism • Pablo Picasso and George Braque • started with the idea that all shapes in nature are based on geometric shapes. • the sphere, the cone and the cylinder • Cubist- fractured the laws of perspective breaking up space into jagged planes without a sense of logic, even presenting the eye of one figure from a frontal view and face in a profile Pablo Picasso George Braque woman with a guitar round table round table violin and candle stick David Smith Filipino cubist artist • the distinctive themes and style that made use of the geometric fragmentation technique in the work of early filipino cubist contributed significantly to the introduction of modern art Vicente Manansala Cesar Legaspi DADAISM • - Founded in Zurich Switzerland in 1916 • -Dada got its name from a nonsense word • nonsense aim , it protested the madness of the world war 1. • the Dadaist artist felt they could no longer trust and reason and society.the alternative was to throw all authority and tradition and cultivate absurdity. • Dada it spread from Zurich to the rest of the world. its main strategy had a more serious purpose than merely to denounce and shock, hoped to awaken the creative imagination . SURREALISM • - A movement that grew out of dadaism was surrealism. • - surrealist appreciated the mystery of dreams and the unconscious. • - for them the world is made of pure imagination and personal expression. Giorgio de Chirico • - first to invent the world of surrealists.one of the worlds most enduring. the world he created is at once desolate and empty but filled with suggestions, deserted yet full of mysterious presence. Nosalgia of the infinite Enigma of the Hour Salvador Dali • - paints a curious kind of dream or nightmare picture, like dreams the painting shows the familiar changing and shifting of the subjects soft construction with boiled beans swans reflecting elephants metamorphosis of narcissus Meret Openheim • infamous surrealists artist • - the artist wanted for these objects is to be provocative, disorienting and like dreams , strange luncheon in fur Man Ray • Gift 1958 Filipino Surrealist Artist • Galo Ocampo and Hernando Ocampo • - they offered a personal solution to life during the years following the trauma of world war I . it became an accurate expression of the Filipino's sentiments. Hernando Ocampo Op Art • op art - exist to fool the eye. Op compositions create a sort of visual tension in the viewers mind that gives the illusion of movement Making waves by Bridget Riley • you will see that it seems to dance and wave in front of your eyes • any op art piece is flat, static and two- dimensional • the eye however begins sending your brain the message that what it seeing has begun to pulsate, vibrate or oscillate. Op art has almost without exception eliminated realistic subject matter • 3. the Elements - color line and shape- are carefully chosen to achieve maximum effect. In. Op art the aim is to draw the viewer into the work in more or less systematic ways • 4. the more important techniques use in op art are prespective and careful juxtaposition of color Happenings, Performance art and Mob • Happening by Allan Kaprow was considered as a historic event that knocked down painting and sculpture from their supremacy in the art world. • happening performance produced art to jolt into awareness the traditional art, no script, no expectations, of the time. it had suggested that the visual art look to the lively art of theater for renewal. Performance art • performances involving the artist talking, singing or dancing. performance art requires artist to use their bodies infront of an audience. it can happen in a theater, gallery, on street, no boundaries. Jose Beuys Digital art • 1960s to 1990s- started the computer generated art works. and geared towards international comic books - computer generated artworks are mostly the young generation artist - training institution were available provided by goverment and private institution. • For Traditional artist , many have questioned the popularity of the digital era Photography in the Philippines • Digital photography is an amazing addition to the world of many Pilipino photographers today. the new digital world of today capture memorable pictures easier and faster and shared immediately. new means to express themselves , explore new ways in digital photography. • today camera has undergone many changes that attract more people. cameras had gone into cellular phone and captures picture and records videos in reality. • digital photograpy- is a form of photograpy that uses cameras containing arrays of electronic photo detectors to capture images • focused by a lens, as opposed to an exposure on photograpic film. • DSLR( Digital single lens reflex camera)- • provides the filmless and instant review features of a point and shoot type of digital camera..
