Communication Skills

The document discusses the process of communication in 3 key points: 1) Communication requires cooperation between a sender and receiver where roles are exchanged, and the communication must consider past, present, and future contexts. 2) Communication is a process of reconstruction by the receiver of messages conveyed verbally and non-verbally by the sender, though the reconstructed message is never identical due to differences in symbols. 3) Barriers to effective communication include a lack of shared context, issues encoding or transmitting messages, inattention, differing perceptions, and clashing attitudes between sender and receiver.

Communication – the inferential model

• Not just a process of just coding and decoding messages.

• Communication is a process of reconstruction by the communicate of a

communicator’s messages from the constellation of verbal and non-
verbal symbols he or she displays,

• The message reconstructed is never the same as the message sent

because the symbols received by the communicate are never quite the
same as the symbols displayed by the communicator

Barriers to communication

• Clash of attitudinal nuances,

• Psyco - physical factors

• Selection of wrong language

• A message is hence not just organized language but a verbal means of the
realization of an intention, sometimes the attitude of the sender is at variance
with that of receiver and when attitudinal clash occurs, communication suffers.
