NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH

DEFINITION

 A narrative paragraph tells a short story or describes an


event.
 In other words, it is a short story about a personal
memory.
DEFINITION

A personal narrative is a story that…


• really happened to the writer (an anecdote)
• is observed by the writer

• shows strong feelings and inspires readers with descriptive words


• is written in the first person (I, we)

 A narrative paragraph tells a short story or describes an event.

Sample topics for narrative paragraphs

1. An incident or accident you witnessed that left a strong


impression on you
2. An event when you were proud of yourself or your family

A good narrative paragraph

• It reveals something of importance to you (your main point)


• It includes all of the major events of the story.
• It uses details to bring the story to life.
• It presents the events in a clear order, usually according to
when it happened.

Organization
A narrative paragraph has 3 parts:

Topic sentence: introduces the experience

Supporting sentences: share details that re-create the


experience (with feelings)

Concluding sentence: reflects on the experience

* Use chronological order and descriptive words


Task: Put the story in a logical order

1. That was why he could not read even when he reached the age of ten.
2. He went into the women's toilet.
3. He sat on a bench.
4. People told him to wash his hands in the toilet.
5. My son, Tom, never made an effort to learn reading.
6. One day, Tom went to the park.
7. He made his hands very dirty because he could not read the sign "WET PAINT".
8. He walked to the toilets.
9. He was caught by the police, and I was labelled “the father of the neighborhood”.
10. He could not understand the words "MEN" and "WOMEN".

The right order: 5, 1, 6, 3, 7, 4, 8, 10, 2, and 9


Guiding questions

1. Purpose: What has happened in my experience that I would enjoy


writing about?
2. Setting: When and where did it happen?

3. Details: How did it progress and who was involved?


4. Reflection: Why do I remember this event so strongly, or what
effect did it have on me?
Verb Tenses in Narration

Simple past Past continuous


To express a completed action at a specific past time To describe ongoing past situations (set the scene)
To describe the sequence of past events To indicate a past action in progress

Past perfect simple Past perfect continuous


To show a past action/situation before another one To describe activities until a specified past time

Task: Add a topic sentence and use the correct verb forms.

The sun (1)shine and the birds (2)sing when I (3)wake up at 8a.m. that morning. I (4)sleep really
well the night before, so I (5)feel quite relaxed to welcome the day. I (6)have a shower, (7)eat
some breakfast and (8)leave for work at 9a.m. My car (9)speed down the deserted highway
when I (10)witness an accident. A driver (11)fall asleep at the wheel and (12)drive straight into a

The Unlucky Burglar

Activity 2: Correct the mistakes with the verb tenses

When I am (was) a university student about two years ago, I enrolled in a scuba diving course. My

scuba diving teacher was having (had) a big surprise: I wasn’t knowing (didn’t know) how to swim. In

fact, I had a big fear of water. When I was a child, my parents try (tried) to help me, so they make

(made) me take many swimming lessons. Although I try (tried) hard, I didn’t learning (couldn’t learn

how) to swim. When I enrolled in the scuba diving course, I was still afraid of water. Everyday I entered

the swimming pool, I battle (battled) my fear. Fortunately, my courage won every time. Finally, one day

while I practicing (was practicing) my dive, I realized I was do (doing) very well. So, finally, after six

months of hard work, I completed (had completed) the course. It is (was) true that I was always (had

always been) the worst of the group, but in my own evaluation, I was (had been) a champion because I

conquer (had conquered) my fear of water. For me, this experience was very important. It was a test of
