First Aid

Wiggling a loose tooth can cause active bleeding from tearing tissue around the tooth. It is best to leave a loose tooth alone to fall out on its own, as significant bleeding is rare when the permanent tooth puts pressure on the area. For tooth loss bleeding, bite firmly on gauze for several minutes and avoid brushing or eating around the lost tooth area for a few days. For animal bites or scratches, wash the wound well with soap and water, watch for signs of infection, and see a doctor for deep wounds or punctures who can prescribe antibiotics or tetanus/rabies shots if needed.

Bleeding from Tooth Loss

• As tempting as it is to wiggle a loose tooth around to help it fall out,

it’s best to leave it alone.
• Because active bleeding occurs when a tooth is pulled before the root
has resorbed and the tissue around the tooth tears. If left alone to fall
out in its own time, the erupting permanent tooth puts pressure on the
area and then significant bleeding is rare.
• You should bite down firmly on a small piece of gauze or a cotton ball
for several minutes. To help prevent bleeding during the next few days,
skip over the area with the lost tooth when brushing teeth and eat soft,
cool foods.
Injuries due to Cats and Dogs
For superficial scratches or bites from a familiar household pet that is
immunized and in good health:

1) Wash the wound with soap and water under pressure from a faucet for
at least five minutes, but do not scrub as this may bruise the tissue.
Apply an antiseptic lotion or cream.
2) Watch for signs of infection at the site, such as increased redness or
pain, swelling, or drainage, or developing fever. If these happen go to the
clinic.
For deep bites or puncture wounds from any animal,

1) If the bite or scratch is bleeding, apply pressure to it with a clean

bandage or towel to stop the bleeding.
2) Wash the wound with soap and water under pressure from a faucet for
at least five minutes, but do not scrub as this may bruise the tissue.
3) Dry the wound and cover it with a sterile dressing. Do not use tape or
butterfly bandages to close the wound as this could trap harmful bacteria
in the wound.
4) Go to the clinic and the doctor will decide if you need antibiotics,
tetanus shots or rabies shots.
5) If possible, locate the animal that inflicted the wound. Some animals
need to be captured, confined, and observed for rabies. Do not try to
capture the animal yourself; instead, contact the nearest animal warden
or animal control office in your area.
