A

Presentation On CCTV systems

What is CCTV?

• Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is the use of

video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific
place on a limited set of monitors.
• It differs from broadcast television in that the
signal is not openly transmitted though it may
employ point to point, point to multipoint or
mesh wireless links.
Why Use CCTV…?
• Prevent and Reduce Chances of Theft
• Useful Criminal Evidence
• Process monitoring and Real-time Video
Surveillance
• Monitor High-risk Human inaccessible Areas
• Better Employee productivity. Encourage Good
Behaviour. Prevent Safety Incidents. Cut down
security related cost.
Evolution of Modern CCTV System
• Invented by Walter Bruch in 1942, to monitor
launch of V-2 rockets during WW 2.
• In 1949,CCTV became available commercially and
used for live monitoring, streamed to monitors –
without the capacity to record the footage.
• In 1960s reel-to-reel recording systems was
introduced. But an operator is needed to thread
tapes through the recorder. But was quickly replaced
with the arrival of VCR recordings in 1970s.
Evolution of Modern CCTV System
• Multiplexing Solutions in 1990s.
• In early 2000s, with digital technology becoming
mainstream, VCRs were replaced with DVRs with
significantly greater storage capacity, speed, and
image quality.
• NVRs, (network video recorders) are among the best
options for modern CCTV systems and incorporate
video processing and encoding capacity within the
camera itself. The footage is then streamed to the
NVR for viewing or recording.
How do CCTV camera works?

CCTV camera systems includes one or more cameras

which are used to send video images and audio data to a
monitor. Essentially, these camera systems use cameras to
transmit the signals to a main hub which then records
that data for later viewing or live viewing.
Types of CCTV Systems
• Analog CCTV system : Analog cameras record images
and then send the signal over a coaxial cable to a DVR (Digital
Video Recorder). The DVR converts the video from analog to
digital signals, compresses the file, and stores it on a hard
drive. By connecting a monitor, video can be viewed. This
system is more suitable for small-scale surveillance purposes.

• IP CCTV system: IP stands for Internet Protocol, and

basically refers to a digital video camera which captures
image digitally and send data via a computer network.

Components of a CCTV System.
 CCTV Camera

 Analog Camera- Analog cameras record images and then send the

signal over a coaxial cable to a DVR.

 IP Camera- Internet Protocol camera record the images digitally and

send data over a computer network rather than going through a
DVR first.
Types of CCTV camera

Dome camera
Bullet camera
Hidden camera
Pan Tilt zoom camera
PTZ Camera:-

PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt and Zoom. A surveillance camera with PTZ
functionality features a rotating lens with directional and zoom capabilities,
and the camera can be controlled remotely; It can pan left to right and tilt up
and down. The lens also zooms in and pulls out, providing imagery at various
distances.

 Digital video recorders(DVR)/Network video recordersNVR

-Purpose:-  they capture video footage transmitted from the cameras and
store them so as to play it later.

In a DVR system, the camera stream is captured from analog cameras.

Because analog cameras are unable to process video at the source, they
pass the raw video feed to the recorder via coaxial cables.
The recorder processes the video into a digital format to be stored or
accessed live.
In an NVR system, video is captured with digital, or IP (Internet Protocol)
cameras. IP cameras process video directly from the camera itself. The
processed stream is then transferred to the recorder via an ethernet cable.
 Power Supply:

For Analog system: Separate power source is needed for each camera.
Each Camera requires a separate 12V DC supply.
DVR requires a separate 12 V supply.

For IP System:
NVR are powered by  AC to DC 12V 2A Power Supply Adapter
IP Cameras are powered by Ethernet Cable which transmits power and
data to camera/systems. These Ethernet cables connects Camera with
Ethernet ports of NVR or a POE switch.
 Cables:

For Analog system:

Co-axial cable:-A type of copper cable covered with a metal shield that can
block interference with the transmission signal. This cable has a
transmission speed of up to 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
LAN Cable:-This is the cable used to connect the CCTV system to a LAN.
For IP System:

Cat Type Cable:-Cat cable is a transmission medium used in IP CCTV systems that have
data transmission capabilities of up to 100-1000 Mbit/s. This cable also has the
advantage of having a low delay response time when transmitting data.
OFC(Optical Fibre Cable):
Fibre Optic Copper
Lifespan 30-50 Years 5 Years
Max Distance 12 miles 328 feet
Weight per 1000ft 4 lbs 39 lbs
Maximum 69Tbps 10Gbps
Bandwidth

equipment)

Security Difficult to Tap Easy to Tap

 Monitor:

-To display the results of camera surveillance.

-Connected with VGA port of NVR/DVR.
