Underground Air Cooling System

The document summarizes an earth air tunnel cooling system. It discusses that the earth air tunnel system uses the constant underground temperature to provide passive cooling and heating. It then describes the different types of passive cooling systems and focuses on the earth air tunnel system. The key aspects covered are how the horizontal and vertical loop systems work, the benefits of reduced energy consumption and environmental friendliness, and applications for commercial and residential buildings. Advantages include low maintenance and operating costs while disadvantages include the need for large space and initial high costs. A case study of its use at TERI University in India is also mentioned.

INTRODUCTION

The Earth Air Tunnel systems utilize the heat-storing

capacity of the earth and the fact that the year-ground temperature four
meters below the surface remains almost constant throughout the year.
That makes it potentially useful in providing buildings with air-
conditioning.

Depending on the ambient temperature of the location, the

earth air tunnel system can be used to provide both cooling during the
summer and heating during winter.
Passive Cooling System

 Passive cooling systems are the least expensive means of cooling a home which
maximizes the efficiency of the building envelope without any use of mechanical
devices.

 All passive cooling strategies rely on daily changes in temperature and relative
humidity.

 The applicability of each system depends on the climatic conditions.

 These design strategies reduce heat gains to internal spaces.

Types of Passive Cooling System

1. Natural Ventilation
2. Shading
3. Wind Towers
4. Courtyard Effect
5. Earth Air Tunnels
6. Evaporative Cooling
7. Passive Down Draught Cooling
EARTH AIR TUNNEL SYSTEM

• Earth air tunnel or earth air heat exchanger is a pre-cooling or pre-heating
system that consists of a pipe or network of pipes buried at a reasonable
depth below the ground surface.

• It either cools the air by rejecting heat to the ground or heats the air by
absorbing heat from the ground.
How it Works
There are two types loop system

1. Horizontal loop system 2. Vertical loop system

Benefits of The System

Reduced the consumption Reduced air conditional demand

Save electricity Environmental friendly

APPLICATION OF EATCS
EATS can be used in a vast variety of buildings:

• Commercial Buildings: Offices, Showrooms, Cinema halls, etc.

• Residential Buildings

• University campus

• Hospitals

• Greenhouses

• Livestock Houses
ADVANTAGES

• EAT-based systems cause no toxic emissions and therefore, are not

detrimental to the environment.

• Ground Source Heat Pumps do use some refrigerant but much less than the
conventional systems.

• EAT-based systems for cooling do not need water – a feature valuable in arid
areas like Kutch. It is this feature that motivated our work on EAT
development.

• EATS have long life and require only low maintenance

• Low operating cost.

DISADVANTAGES:

• All regions are not suitable for EAT systems, due to the earth’s properties, such
as bedrock near the project site.

• Require large space to make setup.

• Initial cost high

• Give a limited cooling effect.

CASE STUDY:

• EAT system has been used in India at TERI University Campus, New Delhi

• The University is dedicated to conducting research for sustainable

development in India.
CONCLUSION

• Integrate the EAT into the building systems to maximize performance and
maximize energy savings.

• With the help of EATS we can control the room temperature according to the
surrounding atmosphere naturally without any mechanical means.
