INTRODUCTION
• Brayton cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that describes the operation of
certain heat engines that have air and other gases as their working fluid.
• Brayton cycle is used in ‘Gas turbine power plant’ & in ‘Air craft engines’.
• TYPES
– Open cycle
– Closed cycle

WORKING OF BRAYTON CYCLE
Brayton Cycle
• 1-2 – Isentropic compression
• 2-3 – Constant pressure heat addition
• 3-4 – Isentropic expansion
• 4-1 – Constant pressure heat rejection

• Isentropic compression
– The working gas is compressed adiabatically by the compressor. In
other words the volume of air decreases with the pressure and
temperature increasing.
• Isentropic expansion
– The compressed and the heated gas expands adiabatically by the
turbine. Or the volume of air increases with a loss in temperature and
pressure.
• Constant pressure heat addition
– Isobaric heat addition.
– A constant pressure heat transfer to air from an external source.
– Temperature of the air (gas) increases with no change in pressure.
• Constant pressure heat rejection
– Isobaric heat rejection.
– Temperature of the working fluid drops with no change in pressure.
