Modern Improvisations in Brayton Cycle

This document is a group presentation for a Power Plant Engineering class discussing improvements to the Brayton cycle. It begins with an introduction to the Brayton cycle and how it is used in gas turbines and aircraft engines. It then discusses the basic workings of the Brayton cycle through pressure-volume and temperature-entropy diagrams. The presentation focuses on common methods used to improve the efficiency of the Brayton cycle, including intercooling, reheating, regeneration, and combined methods. Diagrams and explanations are provided for each improvement method.

INTRODUCTION
• Brayton cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that describes the operation of
certain heat engines that have air and other gases as their working fluid.

• Brayton cycle is used in ‘Gas turbine power plant’ & in ‘Air craft engines’.

• Developed by George Brayton.

• Also known as Joule cycle (or) Constant pressure cycle.

• TYPES
– Open cycle
– Closed cycle

3
WORKING OF BRAYTON CYCLE

Brayton Cycle
• 1-2 – Isentropic compression
• 2-3 – Constant pressure heat addition
• 3-4 – Isentropic expansion
• 4-1 – Constant pressure heat rejection

P-v & T-s DIAGRAM

5
• Isentropic compression
– The working gas is compressed adiabatically by the compressor. In
other words the volume of air decreases with the pressure and
temperature increasing.
• Isentropic expansion
– The compressed and the heated gas expands adiabatically by the
turbine. Or the volume of air increases with a loss in temperature and
pressure.
• Constant pressure heat addition
– Isobaric heat addition.
– A constant pressure heat transfer to air from an external source.
– Temperature of the air (gas) increases with no change in pressure.
• Constant pressure heat rejection
– Isobaric heat rejection.
– Temperature of the working fluid drops with no change in pressure.

METHODS OF IMPROVISATION
Factors affecting Brayton cycle efficiency are
• Turbine inlet temperature
• Compressor and turbine adiabatic efficiencies
• Fractional power loss

The efficiency of a Brayton cycle can be improved by
