Movement in Plants

Plants move in two types of ways: tropic movements and nastic movements. Tropic movements are directional and in response to stimuli, such as phototropism (light), geotropism (gravity), chemotropism (chemicals), hydrotropism (water), and thigmotropism (touch). Nastic movements are non-directional responses to stimuli, like photonasty (opening and closing flowers in response to light) and seismonasty (rapid movement from touch). Plants lack muscles and nerves but can move certain parts through growth responses to external factors.

Movement in plants

Pre-nurture and Career Foundation

Introduction
• Plants have neither a nervous system nor muscles
• but they give response.
• The higher plants are fixed to the substratum by means of root.
• They cannot move from one place to another.
• They therefore show moment of their organ only

Tropic movement
• Tropic movement is
the directional
movement of the part
of a plant caused by its
growth.
• The growth of a plant
part in response to the
stimuli can be towards
the stimulus or away
from the stimulus.

Types of Tropic movement
• Photo tropism
• Geotropism
• Chemotropism
• Hydrotropism
• Thigmotropism

Pre-nurture and Career Foundation

Phototropism
• The movement of part of
the plant in response to
light is called
phototropism

Geotropism
The movement of a part of the plant in response to gravity is called as
geotropism

Pre-nurture and Career Foundation

Chemotropism
The movement of a part
of plant in response to a
chemical stimulus is
called chemotropism

Hydrotropism

Thigmotropism

Pre-nurture and Career Foundation

Thigmotropism
• The movement of a part of plant in response to contact or support is
called thigmotropism
• pea plant climbs up other plants with the help of tendrils
• Tendrils are sensitive to touch
• When tendrils come in contact with any support, the part of the
tendril in contact with the object was not grow as rapidly as part of
tendril away from the object

Nastic movement
• Movement which is neither towards nor away from the stimuli.
• Photo nasty
• Seismonasty

Pre-nurture and Career Foundation

Photonasty
• A number of flower
closeup when light
fades in the evening,
and reopen the next
day when light appears

Seismonasty

Pre-nurture and Career Foundation

Seismonasty
• Such movement occurs in response to touch.
• These moments are very quick and best scene in ‘touch me not plant‘
• If we touch the leaf of the chui mui plant without finger we find that
all it’s leave immediately fold up and droop by using electrochemical
means to convey this information from cell to cell.
