Introduction
 Wind energy describes the process by which wind is used to generate electricity.
Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy  in the wind into mechanical power.
 We need it because it is renewable source of energy .
 Wind is the most reliable and developed energy source over past decades.
 With the rapid presentation of the wind generators in the power grid, it is very essential to
utilize the maximum available power from the wind and to operate the wind turbine at its
maximum energy conversion output.
 Therefore, it is essential to include a controller that can track the maximum peak
regardless of wind speed.
 For this, the wind energy conversion system has to track or operate at the maximum
power point (MPP).

Literature Survey
 The following research paper has been studied and considered as a major reference
for the seminar topic:-

 The paper titled ‘Maximum power point tracking in wind energy’’, authored by : K.
Vigneswaran , Dr. P. Suresh Kumar published in the IJIRSET in January 2016.

This paper emphasised on the importance of wind energy systems and MPPT algorithms.
As one of the most commonly used renewable energy sources, wind is the most promising
one for replacing the fossil fuel in the near future . Wind energy systems are being closely
studied because of its benefits as an environmentally friendly and renewable source of
energy. Because of its unpredictable availability, power management concepts are essential
to extract as much power as possible from the wind when it becomes available. The purpose
of this thesis is to presents a new adaptive control algorithm for maximum power point
tracking (MPPT) in wind energy systems.

Maximum Power Point Tracking
  Maximum power point tracking:-
 MPPT(maximum power point tracking) is a technique that allows the maximum
available energy to be transfer from a transducer.
 To achieve high efficiency in a wind power conversion system, the maximum power
point tracking (MPPT) in variable-speed operation systems, like doubly fed induction
generator (DFIG) and permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG) systems,
attracts a lot of attention.
 Consumed electric power should be equal to the wind power generated.

 MPPT techniques in wind energy system:-

 Tip-speed ratio (TSR)control.
 Optimal relation based control (ORBC).
 Perturbation and observation (P&O) control.
 Hybrid control.
 Neural network control.

 Advantages of MPPT in wind energy:-

 Relying on complex software algorithms, the wind speed can be captured for controlling

the optimal tip-speed ratio so that the MPPT can be implemented. In addition, tracking
Concept of MPPT in wind energy system
 Speed control of rotor is done within the operating range of wind turbines for
maximum power point tracking(MPPT).Controllers are used depending upon
the range within which the control of rotor angular velocity is required and this
range varies for various turbines.
 The idea of this method is the online measurement of the output power and
checking the rate of change of power with respect to speed, i.e., to extract
maximum power from the wind turbine system. MPPT can be achieved when =
0, through adjusting either the rotor speed or duty cycle of the converter.

MPPT for PMSG and DFIG and their comparison
Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG):
When considering small-scale applications in variable speed WECS, Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based WECS structures are focus of the interest due to their
advantages such as high efficiency and low maintenance costs.
When the wind turbine catches the wind speed at rate 4 m/s, PMSG begins to operate.
Therefore, the pitch angle is controlled to catch the maximum coefficient at rate 13 m/s
wind speed. After 0.14 s, the generator-side inverter and the grid-side inverter are cooperated
to control the voltage through controllers.

MPPT for DFIG
 Doubly-Fed Induction Generation (DFIG ):
The DFIG is the superior to the caged induction machine , due to its ability to produce
above rated power. The MPPT control in such system is realized using the machine
side control system
DFIG wind turbine also improves system efficiency with its optimal rotational speed,
reduces noise and mechanical stresses, improves power quality, and compensates for
torque and power pulsations

Feedback control & its need for maximum
power point tracking
 The control of a variable-speed wind turbine below the rated wind speed is
achieved by controlling the generator. The main goal is to maximize the wind
power capture at different wind speeds, which can achieved by adjusting the
turbine speed in such a way that the optimal tip speed ratio is maintained . For a
given wind speed, each power curve has a maximum power point (MPP) .
 Pitch, Yaw, and Rotational Speed Control were the main control methods used to
optimize or limit the power extracted from the wind. Wind turbine control is
essential for optimal performance, safe operation, and structural stability.
