What is PRDS ?
Auxiliary steam from MS Line and CRH line is
tapped. Its pressure is reduced and de-superheated to
desired temperature and pressure.
Auxillary PRDS system is designed to provide steam
for turbine auxillaries and boiler auxillaries.
The main theme behind de-superheater is a process
called “Attemperation”.
A de-superheater is a device that injects a prescribed
amount of water into a gas flow stream.
When the auxiliary steam reaches the desired
temperature and pressure, it is then used for various
purposes where it is required.
Why PRDS?
The main role of PRDS System comes into action at
the time of unit start up.
Apart from the main steam which we use to rotate the
main turbine, we also need the steam for many other
important processes such as , to create a gland seal to
stop air evacuation at HP turbine and air ingress at LP
turbine, mill inerting etc.
But at the time of unit start up, boiler will be in off
condition. There will not be steam available from the
unit boiler. Under such conditions, a readily steam
delivering system should be provided to meet the steam
requirement. That is done using PRDS System.
The following are the main outlets of PRDS System.
HT PRDS:
1. TDBFP rolling and sealing.
2. Gland seal system.
3. Air Pre-heater Soot Blowing.
4. Mill Inerting .
LT PRDS:
1. D/A Heating & Pegging.
2. Steam for SCAPH.
1. APH Soot Blowing
Purpose: Steam will be required for air pre heater soot blowing
Parameters:
Details:
During normal operation condition the soot blowing for APH from Main steam.
During startup i.e. during oil firing the APH soot blowing will be done by the
steam from Auxiliary PRDS to avoid fire.
1. APH Soot Blowing
2. Mill Inerting
Purpose: To dilute the oxygen content of the pulverizer when the risk of a pulverizer explosion
is increased steam is required to maintain an inert condition in pulverizer.
Tapping point: HT PRDS
Parameters:
Mill inerting : 16KSC , 310 0C .
Details:
During routine operation, pulverized coal is transported to boiler with the help of hot
primary air. The coal and hot air mixture forms a fire hazardous situation.
If the temperature reaches beyond a critical value, it results in ignition within the coal
mill.
The steam in such condition is utilized as an inerting media by reducing the chances of
coal getting caught on fire.

3. TDBFP Rolling & its Gland Sealing
Purpose: Steam will be required for turbine rolling and gland sealing system
Parameters:
Details:
During the normal operating conditions the turbine will get rolling steam and
seal steam supply from CRH and IP extraction line.
During startup both rolling and sealing steam will be taken from Aux PRDS.
4. Main Turbine Gland Sealing
Parameters:
During the normal operating conditions the HP,IP and LP turbines are sealed
with steam from CRH extraction line.
During startup the sealing steam will be taken from Aux. PRDS.
1. Steam Coil Air Pre Heater
Purpose: Steam will be required for Steam Coil APH
Parameters:
Details:
To increase the efficiency of the boiler, air pre heating is employed. But under
normal conditions, the inlet air to the APH unit is at 40 0C . At this condition, SCAPH
is bypassed.
But during the times of cold seasons, ambient air inlet temperature falls below
certain temperature. To increase the temperature to the desired air inlet
temperature, SCAPH is equipped. It consists of a coil wound inside which steam
flows. The flow of steam through coil transfers heat to the air outside the tube.

2. Deaerator Pegging
Purpose: Steam will be required for deaerator initial heating and pegging
Parameters:
Details:
During cold startup the heat will be sourced through aux PRDS header.
Once the CRH parameter is established the source will be switched over to CRH.
2. Deaerator Pegging
